Mystery time!

I came across this Remington 870 that left me absolutely perplexed. The basic are this is a 12 gauge left hand Model 870 pump action shotgun.

However, the more you look at it the weirder it gets. The left hand Remington guns I've come across before all have their make and model marks on the right side of the receiver, opposite of the ejection port. On this gun, the marks are on the left side of the receiver on the same side as the ejection port. This leaves the right side of the receiver completely bare. There is also no "Left Hand" mark anywhere on the gun, which all lefthand Remington products that I've seen usually have.

The barrel code letter is a "W", making year of manufacture 2002 possibly.

Another peculiarity is the mere fact this is a rifle sighted smoothbore barrel. While not uncommon in normal right hand 870s, factory 20" smoothbore barrels with rifle sights on left hand guns are not. In fact, I've never seen one in person or online. The style of the rear sight indicates a more recent date of production, along with the font of the receiver marks, the hue of the bluing, and the stamped checking of the handguard.

The last clue as to what this gun is is the absolutely rough feeling of the action. This is no Wingmaster, at least not in feeling. There is significant roughness in the action, pointing to a lack of care in the production process.

My gut feeling is that this is a Remington employee gun, or a factory mistake of sorts.

What's your take on this special 870?

Thank you for reading my post!

You just might have a Unicorn...and in very nice condition.
I have never held one in left hand configuration , let alone see one in the wild.(never searched for one)
3Macs might have a history on it if he decides to pop in.

The "Fleur de Lis" type stock would indicate a much earlier production of the stock ...

Around 1980s .....

Here is the Remington catalogue from 1981:
https://cartridgecollectors.org/content/catalogs/REMINGTON/1981-Rem-DuPont-Retail%20Catalog.pdf

In 1981 you were able to order your 870 with 52 different types of barrels ... :)
And I am pretty sure Remington would have sold you a left handed "deer" barrel around that time ....

And here is the catalogue from 2002:
https://cartridgecollectors.org/content/catalogs/REMINGTON/2002-Remington-Retail%20Catalog.pdf

By that time the stocks had a very different checkering ....

---

And talking about unicorns or uniqueness .... well, with over 11 million 870s produced over 70 years .... and with parts being interchangeable between different 870 models ..... yeahhh ..... there are all kinds of combinations/versions out there .... some might have a stock from the 1980s and with a receiver from 1990 and with a barrel from 2002 ... and repaired with new action bars in 2020 .....

If you want to do more research .... here is a link to Remington catalogues from 1911 to 2011 ...
