IF a new Grizzly hunt, what gun

F&S Magazine story #3 hunters in NW Alberta approached a carcass weren't aware a Grizzly was feeding on it, Bear charged them hunter fired a shot didn't stop it, rammed his rifle barrel down its throat then it backed off shot it again. Defensive kill.

In the local news Oct 2016 more detailed in the magazine article.

Good reminder to never approach carcasses in grizzly country. When you see ravens, smell something putrid or see disturbed ground, time to get ready and get the hell out of there until you can safely glass it from a distance and find an alternate route.

Plenty of cutblocks, meadows, pipelines, leases where a bear can pop out and charge you. I would guess that the g bear population in southern Alberta is as dense as anywhere in Canada. But that’s just a guess.

You’re right the best mountain habitat in Alberta is indiscernible bear wise from the best mountain habitat in BC. Only difference between the two is BC’s mountain habitat keeps going, and as a result grizzlies are found more broadly (AB’s 7% mountainous, BC’s 75%). That really doesn’t make a difference on foot when you’re in the bears, you’re not crossing 75% of BC on foot in a hunt.

This ignores the coast, which is an outlier due to salmon and just one short river can hold all of Jasper Park’s grizz population. Seeing as Alberta coastline and salmon is in short supply these days it’s a bit like talking about BC’s pronghorn population.

Or the bear. Black bears get shot digging in a garden. Grizzly bears are somehow much more valuable.

They’re a symbol of the wilderness, and the king of it on our continent.

I used to live in Canal Flats B.C. .... Rocky Mountains to the East / Purcell Mountains to the West .... had 2 encounters with Boar Grizz, both very different from each other. First encounter was somewhat benign at a distance of 75 yards, the second more intense at a distance of 15 yards. In this case, I came upon him in a bluff at the base of a slide in the Rockys'....when he saw me, he reared up on his back legs (yes, intimidating !) and "blew" at me twice ..... he came down on all fours and quartered away from me at full run, snapping new growth trees at ground level. My experience is just how different animals of the same species can be AND be aware of your environment because your environment is aware of YOU !
Just as a side point, within a mile of that encounter, I came across a jet black panther on an old skidder road 3 years later ...... the question asked I believe, is what calibre one would use on a Grizz .... bolt action = 300 RUM, lever action = 45-90 Gov't

It's pandering to the Urban Mindless, the Game Wardens flat out refuse to deal with problem Grizzly Sows with Cubs (which grow up to be Problem Bears) because they'll get Crucified.

the cos here are using 22 magnum when the sow will it be grizzly or black bear got a tag on each ears ... some are not even scared of gunshots ...

I believe
BC--- 50/60 % of getting back a G hunt
Why-- It sounds like the folks there wanna wait till 8 yards and then defend . This will bring more casualties and more news . So more pressure to re-introduce ..LOL
AB --- 15 % of getting back the hunt
Why---the folks here are ready to shoot a little sooner eg: 80/100 yards . Will have fewer casualties and therefore less news .
All in fun
I have enjoyed this thread . Learned alot
