IF a new Grizzly hunt, what gun

I'm barely middle aged and I remember when Grizzly tags were OTC. They started choking off the tags about 30 years ago, now the last 10 or so Grizzlies are a real problem. What the hunt did was that the least wary Bears in the most accessable areas were taken, now these Bears are a problem and increasing as Grizzlies are prolific no matter what is claimed, when was the last time you saw an Elk or Moose with 3-4 calves in tow, even given that Bears don't reproduce every year they're still more prolific than the larger ungulates.

Pretty much the same thing happened here in Ont when the tree huggers put enough pressure to have the spring black bear hunt cancelled. 14yrs roughly of bears doing their thing every spring and then those same people are complaining of nuisance bears in populated residential areas..

Well what did you expect? Population increase and territory expansion is a relative thing, be-it humans or animals. Thankfully the spring hunt is back and populations of bears will slowly return to normal, no doubt to the dismay of those that initiated the cancellation in the first place.

It always floors me when I hear the antis arguments regarding spring bear hunts (Griz, Browns or Blacks)

You know the usual… we’re just shooting them for a trophy photo, leaving motherless cubs to fend for themselves etc.

Until.. you show them documented facts and/or video of Boars hunting down and killing Cubs just to put the Sow back into heat and how violent and calculating said Boars are doing so.

Most people want to deal with a charging bear at a range where it can’t bite you. Gatehouse et al are pretending to be bear handlers not hunters. Impressive!

You know... It is really simple stuff. I don't know where I ever said that was I shooting bears from 100 yards away...

It's going to be spring time soon. The bears are going to be waking up. As soon as the snow melts enough, lots of fence to go check on and fix.
Then it really won't matter how far away the bear is.
And fear still won't have anything to do with it.
Simple enough?

R.

As I said before- everyone should go with their own ability, experience and confidence.

Simple stuff.

Even with draws some places were functionally over the counter. In the agricultural area by the Salmon river just outside of PG I lived in draw odds were over 80% iirc. Good lines of sight too :dancingbanana:

Many grizzly LEH hunts were undersubscribed, especially in areas that had access issues. BC hunters were never in danger of over harvest of grizzlies. Damn NDP governemt decided to appease the urban bedwetters. I haven't kept up top date on this but IIRC at least one rural Indian band declared that they were going to continue grizzly hunting.

Thousands of people were putting in for the LEH. Even before the ban, they were choking off tags in R4, which has a major Grizzly problem now. Yellowstone to Yukon ya know and you know who's behind it.

Yes, it was very reflective of general mismanagement by BC gov. The only surprising thing was that they didn’t listen to guide outfitters, considering their general willingness to bend over backwards for them (general moose tags in spike only for resident areas of 7a coming to mind…).

The BC Liberal party was pretty good to outfitters. Caused a bit of discontent with resident BC hunters as you are obviously aware of. NDP- not so good to outfitters and residents. Honestly I think the NDP would ban all hunting in BC if they could get away with it.

so the gvt impacted only a few thousand hunters and did not care ... what a surprise lol always the same pattern ... here they banned the hunt of grizzly bear from 100 m from the road on the southern area and only one grizzly was taken every 3 years ... while black bear are still open ...i ve been here for 14 years and the antis are winning everywhere ... because like firearms we re not able to get organized and im pretty sure between hunting orgs and outfitters there is a way as at the end the hunt will be just a piece of souvenir.

Ruger Marlin 45-70 with HSM 430 gr hard cast

nice .. I have a 2 moa red dot and like it for over bait . That 2.5 fixed is sweet too . Have you ever nailed a bear with those 430 , curious

Negatory. Brand new set up ...

You're in good company with that . I have used the 45-70 over bait with the 300 vor-tx , 400 grain rem and the 375 dual bond . The 300 copper is an excellent killer too .To be honest those 430's should go thru a bear and the next 3 trees , I'm sure . Just hit in the shoulder , both if you can , bust em up and they drop on the spot . Good huntin

Unlikely on the humans being here first, the 13,000 year grizzly history in North America was turned on its head in Edmonton of all places. Humans have been here much longer than we used to think, but likely not 55,000-70,000 years. The black bear would have been in for a shock when the grizzlies arrived and took over all the nutrient dense areas.

Well my friend, that is not the evidence, there is zero evidence Grizzlies were around Edmonton 32,000 years ago and the evidence from the California Tar Pits is that people were around before Grizzlies.

32,000 years for a Grizzly around Edmonton is Fiction. People were in NA before Grizzlies.
