20 gauge target slugs

What is the difference between a regular slug and a "target" slug? If you are looking for cheap 20g slugs good luck. They were $1+/each before the latest panic.

I don't think I have ever heard of "target slug" before - just checked my 20ga slug stash in my safe and nothing on any of them indicates "target". "Rifled", yes, but not "target".

You are looking at $1 - $2 a round (more likely $1.50 and up per round) for various typical standard sized and weight rifled slugs, to much more for the magnum variety.

Site sponsors carry a variety of these rifled slugs for different needs. Cheapest I have found (aside from buying second hand) are the Remington Sluggers, from recent memory - Tenda had them for a sale over a year or so ago but they are now back a regular price.

This is the cheapest in stock slug pack of 5 that I can see from a site sponsor:

Thanks all for the replies! When I said target slugs I guess I meant cheap slug for target shooting. Saying all this, I have seen a product at Cabela's that was labeled as specifically target slug, see below description:

• Exceptional accuracy and consistency
• Less felt recoil
• Ideal choice for competition or other high-volume shooters

This Challenger® 12 GA Target Slug is the ideal choice for competition or other high-volume shooters. This ammunition delivers exceptional accuracy and consistency with less felt recoil than traditional slug ammunition.

For $8.00 per 5 rounds, I'd pick the Federal rifled slug rounds over Challenger, any day. The hulls are better on the Federal unlike the cheaper hulls on the Challengers.

Wait, I thought you were looking for 20 gauge. What you listed (Challengers) is only available in 12ga and the caliber drop down shows no other options. (plus a box of 12ga Challenger 25 round slugs for $40 is steep, but then again any ammo at Cabela's is generally more costly than at the LGS).

If you want 12ga lower recoil and Canadian made that is better than Challenger...in my experience, the Score rounds are worth considering (think they are made in Manitoba). I shoot these almost exclusively at my club.

If you are looking for 20ga. The Federal one I listed in a previous post is still probably the best value in my opinion.

I was only showing the 12g as an example of a product that I had found that was labeled specifically "target slug". I am looking for 20 gauge. Thanks again for the help!

I wonder how much of the terminology is marketing, though. The Score one is marketed as a competition slug...there is a presumption inherently in the terminology that there is some degree of precision, which I dunno...I have never seen slugs as a precision projectile but I could be wrong.

Obviously the 20ga selection/variety is not as widespread as the 12ga. If you do find flats / cases of rounds of 20ga, they are almost always game loads or target loads (like the Winchester AA). And unfortunately the 20ga slugs are more costly than their 12ga counterparts, and more often than not, only come in packs of 5 (or in more rarer cases, 10).

Check with Hummasons in Ancaster. I don't know what's up with their website but it used to show live inventory. They had 20 ga challengers the last time their site was current a couple weeks ago.
Shooter's Choice in Waterloo shows 86 boxes in stock.
