The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 OWNERS thread.

https://www.firearmsoutletcanada.com/freedom-ordnance-fx-9-carbine--9mm-4-6--fro-fx9p4-.html

this is having stock instead of the buffer tube and considered restricted rifle. so i assume what i earlier shared is restricted rifle as well ? let me contact irungun. thanks

If it has a stock on it in the US it is now considered a Small Barreled Rifle ie SBR and now requires a SBR Stamp US talk for a permit. Current wait time said to be 8 months. With a stock it becomes a restricted rifle in Canada.

we put 150 rounds of blazer 115gr box ammo through the fx9 and it ran great with the various pmags and it wasn't dirty at all inside besides some black soot. unlike the reloads we ran awhile back with were super dirty and didn't work to well. so blaming that poor experience on the ammo haha...

unfortunately we we pulled the upper and lower apart to have a look, noticed the LBHO lever is cocked to the side a fair amount and rubbing bad so it sticks open. didn't stick open when firing just when its separated... also looks like the bolt is doing some decent damage to the lever...

pictures since they say a 1000 words and everyone love pics haha..
anyone else's fx9 look like this after ruffly 350 shells?

Mine was peened worse than that. I believevit gets that way from the bolt either skipping over the bolt stop or just catching it using OEM Glock mags.

Oddshot yes gen 2

Canuck44. Hmmm interesting I had only used a stock glock mag once otherwise it’s pmags. Weird. Oh well as long as it doesn’t affect performance haha maybe it’s self fixing? 😜

I suspect it likely will only get worse. The good news is it is a warranty item and not to difficult to replace. If they replace enough of them maybe they will do something about it. The part hardly engages the follower on some mags and misses entirely on others.

Yes hopefully they will upgrade the design at some point. I did put a warranty claim in through the freedom ordnance web page. We will see what they say.

Was it thegazelle that had his warrantied? I'm curious if the replacement part is different material, or different dimensions, or both.
Same part.i suspect they sent me under warranty. IMHO the part needs to have metal added to the part where it engages the mag follower. Right now when you use OEM Glock mags. The part does not engage the follower and fails to catch the bolt. With the upper off you can watch what happens in real time. No mystery as to why the part fails. The mystery is why they have not fixed the problem. I am going to see if my gunsmith can brase a small addition to the arm. If he can it will be a permanent fix.

if your smith is pretty talented/crafty maybe he can make a whole new upgraded LBHO lever? he could address the mag issue and the bent/pitted catch... im sure they would sell... im hoping wolverine just sends me a new one instead of having to send the gun to them, but if they keep failing then a new one every x# of rounds is not a great option....

If you have a mag or mags that do hold the bolt back every time then the bolt catch won't peen. I would stop using mags that don't hold the bolt back OR get some Steel Weld and fill in the notch on follower where the mag engages the catch. That is what I did and the mags now hold the bolt back. I am not sure it is a long term solution but time will tell. If you continue to use mags that work sometimes and sometime not then you are going to see more peening.

hmm. this is interesting as this happened the last time we were out and I was only using the pmags and they have held the bolt back every time, and did so for the last 150 rounds that it ran flawlessly. it was after that trip out I noticed the damage when I got home to inspect.

Picking up a new FX9 tomorrow.

I’m a fairly new to firearms.

What magazines are good and which ones should I stay away from?

Thanks

You're going to get different opinions on this, but here's mine for what it's worth.

1. Glock OEM G5 native 10 rounders - they work OK, but when I had issues with the last round bolt hold open, it seemed to happen more with the Glock OEM mags. I can say it is definitely the mags because my other mags had the problem consistently less (the mags didn't cause the problem but it seemed to be exacerbated with the Glock mags). Bob (Canuck44) can talk more about his findings with the Glock OEM mags. They are heavier than the other options below and are pricier. I have 8-9 Glock OEM G5 native 10 rounders and 3 OEM G4 native 10 rounders (only difference may be the colour of the follower). I also have a 33-rounder pinned to 10, which seems to function more reliably than the native 10 rounders, but it obviously protrudes much more.

2. Magpul PMAGs - GL9/GL7 - both are a much cheaper (price wise) option and they have and continue to work fine. I have about 10-15 of these. I got another one that is a 27-rounder pinned to 10, which works great. Personally, I would use PMAGs for both their reliability and price point. They are overall lighter than the Glock mags. Also much easier to open up and clean/adjust than Glock.

3. ProMag (don't know what the model is but it is a native 10 rounder) - it worked fine though I only have 2 of them.

I agree with the above. I have had excellent luck with SHK marked 10/32 mags from Korea.

Unfortunately the part that holds the bolt open after the last round has an issue. The piece of the part that should engage the follower is too short and slips by most Glock OEM mags as well as other after market mags. It really is hit and miss. My next door neighbour bought one and the gun does not have the issue most of the time.

I have talked to Freedom Ordnance and they seem to think it is only a Canadian problem. I asked if there is enough room to extend the arm that hits the follower and they indicated there is so I have epoxied a small extension on the arm of a spare part I have. Next week I will install it and see if it will hold up with use and solve the problem with the part. I am quite certain it will. My gunsmith in Kitimat is down with shingles right now but when he is back on his feet I may have him braze an extension to make it permanent.

To the OP don't be discouraged by our comments. The FX9 is a great platform. The mag issue is one that factory should correct. The gun will come with a mag and I am quite sure it will hold the bolt back after the last round. Before you go out and buy mags see if you van borrow a OEM mag. You might get lucky and they will work. If they don't search out some Pmags that Jeremy suggested. If he says they work...they work.

I am waiting for some mags I got from Marstar. I will know if they work later this PM. I will post the result here later today.

Much appreciated to you both!

And yes, there seems to be many opinions on this.
I will try your suggestion.

Have you had any issues with ammo brands/types? Aluminum case ,flat nose ,or HP?

Cheers

For what it is worth I've had good luck with PMAG 17 GL9s and SGM mags both 17 and 33 rounders. (1 of my SGM 17s is out of spec and always fails to hold the bolt open, but the other 4 are good and so is the 1, 33 I have)
Genuine Glock mags have been less than spectacular for bolt hold open for me. (Mine are all unpinned 10 rounders)

I'd avoid FAB defense mags unless you're willing to do so filing. Mine don't lock into place and literally fall out of the firearm. (Work fine in Glock 17, just not FX-9)
