trying to decide if i should buy an AR-180b. why? ehh.. because i dont have one, and a non-restricted AR sounds like fun.
anyone know roughly how accurate they are out of the box?
Its an non-restricted AR-180B...other than using AR-15 mags, it can't be confused with an actual AR-15. There are other, better options out there for a non-restricted, black rifle that you can use hunting. Granted, they're more expensive, or, you can wait for ArmedSask's version!
As for projects...I'm just finishing up a new tactical 700 build. Still waiting on optics and need to have a larger tactical bolt knob installed before I re-parkerize everything and kind of waffling whether of not to get a V-Bull mag conversion. For the build, I used a new 20" LTR profile barrel from Remington and the donor action was an older 6mm Rem that I sacrificed.
I've got it mounted in a top of the line HS Precision PT-25 tactical stock with adjustable comb and length of pull. Its got aluminum bedding blocks built in, but I also skim bedded the action with acraglas so that its so tight, you have to rock the action into and out of the stock. Zero movement! Added a nice, 1" solid Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad as well.
I had everything trued up and the chamber set back a smidge to give me a tight, match equivalent chamber. Pulled my Leupold varmint scope off the .22-250 while waiting for my new MK 4. Shoots like a frickin' laser beam! Shooting off a rest I'm getting sub 1/4 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yards using my own handloads. Hell, I'm getting sub 1/2 MOA at 100 yards shooting Winchester Whitebox 147gr FMJ!!!
What really sets the rifle apart from other LTR style rifles is the stock. It has a relatively long forearm so there's only about 3-4" of barrel protruding beyond the end of the forearm. I like the look and to my mind the balance is better than if I'd dropped in one of my VS or P rifles sporting 24"-26" barrels.
Once that's finished, I'm going to build a new Safari type .458 Lott using a Remington 700 action, laminate stock. Going with a heavier Safari type profile barrel with the barrel band sling swivel, ramped/hooded front sight and rear Express style sight leaves. I'll probably use it on a moose, but have the faint hope of taking it to Africa before I hit 40.
