Need help finding my ideal 22 bolt gun!

I did quite a bit of chicken hunting on my ATV this year and with the thick brush in my area and skittish birds, I put the shotgun away pretty early and stuck to my fav partridge sniper 17 hmr.

I went hunting with a good friend of mine who brought along his Savage 22 bolt gun and he was having a blast with iron sights and gave a me case of the "I gotta have its". Me being me, there has to be a twist...

The rifle I'm picturing is a bolt action, detachable mag fed, barely legal barrel length/overall length, and able to take a micro dot or a nice set of skinner peeps or something like that. I plan to shoot subsonics out of it to keep the noise tolerable.

Closest I've been able to find is an old Norinco that appears to be rare these days, and Dlask that will custom make me a fancy 10/22 to those specs. I almost pulled the trigger on a custom dlask, but the kicker is, subsonic ammo won't cycle my 10/22, so I don't imagine it will cycle a fancy one. So I'm back to a bolt gun and my search continues.

Any ideas on where to find my unicorn would be appreciated!

Maybe a Volquartsen, KIDD, Voodoo, Tikka ora Browning A-Bolt 22 ( cant remember if it has a mag) or what about a lever action 22 ? - You won't get cycling problems

CZ makes a shorter barrelled 22 if you want bolt action with a 16" barrel.

The other option is using the quiet semi auto from cci. It is 835 fps, and cycles in my 10/22 just fine. Can get a shorter 12" or even 8" barrel on the 10/22.

I use a custom 16.5" take down 10/22 as my chicken gun.

Did you look at the Norinco Scorpio? I have a 13" one for sale or you can go new if you like polymer stocks instead. Shoots 1/2 MOA and cheaper as chips.

The JW15 or whatever is expensive for what it is. 400+ for a chinese cz clone is crazy. Most don't shoot very good from what Ive seen.

If you're looking for cheap, I'd also vote for the 13" version of the Norinco Scorpio. They take a bit of tinkering to smooth out like any Norinco does, but they're good rifles. The plastic stock that comes with isn't even half bad. I got both my kids one of the longer barrel ones, and I've got the heavier barrel version Canada ammo had a bunch of years ago. The new skinny barrel ones aren't as accurate as my older one, but 3/4" at 50 with CCI standard is pretty reasonable for a cheap rifle using cheap ammo. I definitely prefer the slightly worked over Norinco to any stock savage 22 I've shot, especially for close to double the price.

The only draw I have to a Savage rimfire after owning and selling one is the fact they are built here in Ontario.
My Mk II TR shot pretty good but feel and finish left me looking elsewhere.

If your not totally set on a detachable mag try to find an old Cooey model 600 or an older semiauto Marlin 22 with a detachable mag . the Cooey has a tube mag . as for a short barrel it is what it is .

The dlask build is a good option. The dlask spring kit will let you run sub sonic ammo out of it fine. They volquartsen also makes a kit that would let you run a 22 shorts in a 1022. Another option is that savage/stevens once made a mark 2 with a 13.5" barrel. I made a thread on here a while back about the shortest and lightest NR 22 and it would be worth a read. Lots of good info in there. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...mallest-light-weight-NR-22lr-for-a-pack-rifle

When I say short barrel, I mean SHORT barrel. I know there's tons of 16" barreled 22s out there, I'm looking for something more along the lines of an 8 to 12.5" barrel.

You could always use a 10/22, fairly cheap and easy to get that short a barrel on them. I've been able to get both of mine to reliably cycle subsonics, just had to put a bit bigger radius in the back of the bolt to allow a bit more leverage against the hammer when it cycles. One of mine had a 10" or 11" barrel and ran great this way with subsonics. The short barrel meant it was still pretty loud though, but no crack. It was lots of fun with the little red dot, and surpringly accurate. I got bored punching paper in a gravel pit one day at about 25-30 yards, so I shot at the end of the 3/8" OD tubing that was holding up my target board. When I cut it open I found that I'd managed to send 5 or 6 shots down the tube, and they were all smashed together a few inches in. The Scorpio I mentioned earlier has a 13" barrel, if that's short enough.
