Need help finding my ideal 22 bolt gun!

As turbo said - You can get 10/22s to run subsonic ammunition. And most of the typical HV ammunition will actually be subsonic out of the shorter barrels. BUT whatever ammunition you use, it will seem pretty loud because you won't get a full powder burn inside the short barrel.

Also, your ammunition's terminal performance will drop with the reduced muzzle velocity from the shorter barrel. This might matter for hunting purposes.

Another fairly short option will be to take a Mare's Leg lever action (13" barrel) and put a full buttstock on it. No detachable magazine, of course, but would be a sweet shooter with peep sights on it.

No need for full custom 10/22, either, here's an ~11" aftermarket sporter profile barrel, standard receiver, in a Ruger Compact stock. No fitting required. ~28.5" overall with a thread protector rather than the flash hider. Nice slick profile for easy stowing and dragging through the brush.

He's looking to cycle quiets (710fps), not just subsonic (1080fps)
If anyone has their 10/22 doing that reliably I'd be curious to hear how

Yes that's right, the quiets I've shot marked 710 fps on the box are what I'm looking to shoot.

I never thought of changing out the spring in a 10/22. Suppose I could tinker with some springs and maybe a buffer to see if I can get it to run reliably?

I have been grouse hunting with my .22LR for several years, after switching away from a 20 ga shotgun.

I tried the CCI quiets but found them to be difficult estimate holds for head/neck shots for the longer shots. By longer I mean about 15 to 20 yards plus. IMO they are too slow and the trajectory is too curved for the diversity of distances I need to shoot. While most of my grouse are shot at about 5-10 yards, maybe out to 15 yards, some are longer shots where the trajectory of the Quiet round is dropping rapidly and an accidental body hit is possible (ruining meat), or a miss when the holdover is not estimated correctly.

I prefer the flatter trajectory of the subsonic hollow points. Subsonics still produce the hearing damaging crack noise, so I wear electronic ear muffs when shooting, which is a hassle. I walk with them off my ears around my head so I can hear the real sounds of the bush, then I pull them down for taking the shot. Its frustrating and irritating having to do this with the ear protection, and I wish I could use the Quiets without the ear protection, but I find I get better hits and clean kills with the subsonics.

(EDIT: By "Subsonics" I mean the standard muzzle velocity ammo in the approx 1050 to 1100 range).

CZ 457 scout with the youth stock swapped for a full length takeoff from the EE. Worked for me!

^gee, is everybody doing that? :)

The Norinco JW15-As are probably the ones the OP was referring to, I bought both of mine for $175 or less back in the day. Both gone now. I don't think they're worth much more than about $200 but I would pick one over one of the newer Norincos with the funky stocks. The mags on the newer ones are very good though.

CZ457 (or older 452) SCOUT might be the best choice, try the stock with a heavy coat before switching if you hunt in winter weather. Probably the best option for the shortest bolt action with good accuracy potential. (unless you have an Anschutz budget?)

Tikka T1x 16.5" barrel would probably be a great choice, I've found the 20" barreled version to be a superb gun.

I've also found that in my guns, the CCI Quiet options are not very accurate (compared to the other CCI options). No surprise there, it's tough to get consistent pressures when the powder charge is that low.

FWIW, out of a long barrel (24"), the subsonics are VERY quiet.

The dlask build is a good option. The dlask spring kit will let you run sub sonic ammo out of it fine. They volquartsen also makes a kit that would let you run a 22 shorts in a 1022. Another option is that savage/stevens once made a mark 2 with a 13.5" barrel. I made a thread on here a while back about the shortest and lightest NR 22 and it would be worth a read. Lots of good info in there. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...mallest-light-weight-NR-22lr-for-a-pack-rifle
The firefly bolt and short kit are no longer available from Volquartsen. One recently sold new in the package on the EE.

^hey man, I'm trying hard not to like semis. Don't give me any ideas. lol

I use a Remington model 24 in 22 short only. It reliably cycles the 22 CBs and is extremely quiet to shoot, very light to carry and (for me) accurate at grouse hunting distances......Highly recommended. Current model would be a Browning SA22 in short only and it would also allow for a scope or red dot.

I use a cz scout as well, a definite chicken killer. as stated earlier, stick w subsonics, not "quiets" as they definitely loop too much. i would also stick w a 16" barrel as muzzle blast gets disproportionately obnoxious the shorter you go.

Scorpio EM322X... will do all you want out of the box... just apply a little TLC

If you want to build, I can offer prefit shorty barrels in all sorts of configurations for several popular bolt rifles... and the 10/22.

PM or email.

If money is not a subject go with Anschutz.
If money is a subject stick with savage

x2 on this statement.

I have had lots of .22s but recently sold almost all my bolt guns to buy 1x Anschutz 54. Only other one I kept was my cheap Savage mark 2 heavy barrel.

Cz 452 scout or the latest model, no need for full size stock since that short stock work quite well up especially with winter jacket.

I love the scorpio Scorpio EM322X I just wish it had iron sights and a more traditional stock. Just for fun I tried sighting through the gap in the rail and it does work for minute of grouse accuracy at close distances. I feel like with a front sight post that setup would actually be a pretty good peep sight for a bush gun. I might try that sometime. I feel like you would have a good market for a chassis for the scorpio @Jahnj0584 I'd certainly be interested if you do decide to build one like you have mentioned in another thread. The scorpio has my vote for a great little bush 22.

I tried the cci quiets on grouse.
Didn’t have great luck at all.

I see they mane a 710fps segmented hollow point. That might be a good one to try.

I have a savage rascal for my kids that is surprisingly accurate. Its not magazine fed but the thing is really tiny and you can put a rail with a red dot if you want, the irons are easy to use though. We havent shot any CCI Quiet out of it but it shoots blasers very well.
