What does a Coyote do when it sees you? what does a Wolf do?

There are always exceptions to the rule, I had a young wolf stand back in the trees and bark and growl at me, his hide now resides in my basement. :redface:

^^Anyone who's hunted in the boreal on foot and was aware would notice wolves were shadowing them. Not 4 days ago had a big black one hanging around(not, "wabasca" big, but big), mock charged wife/dog, with wife yelling/waving stopped about 50 yds short. Moved on before I got in range with the .243. Keep in mind this is the time of year critter's starve. Deep crusted snow, ungulate's move to where they can find feed, predators get desperate.

Coyote's around here change addy's when they see a half ton, in the car they aren't very scared. As a child being raised a half mile from a coulee I was scared once by coyotes; then I started carrying the .303 and that ended that.

Basically, neither are a danger in general, but they're pack animals/predators, and will attempt to hunt whatever they think they can safely kill. That's the simple fact.

On a bright note, there's some foxes hanging around the yard, love foxes, eat a ton of mice and enjoy hearing them bark in the evening.
 
Usually, they’ll stand and evaluate for a bit, then trot off. Hunted lots of them, now I just take their picture these days.

Every wolf or coyote I’ve come across up here in NW Ontario just ran away. Not sure how they’d react to dogs though. Haven’t ever come across one with my dog. Also, my encounters have always been one-offs - never stumbled onto a pack.

Coyotes run like a Hellhound is chasing them. Last wolf I saw while out hunting took off like a rocket before I could get a shot off.

On the farm they often stand there waiting to get shot.
 
Wolves are just animals making a living, and rather admirable ones. I get where and when we need to intervene, and have assisted in that. But just the same, hold no ill will against them and I love hearing them howl, and coming across one close up. It’s a special moment sharing space with the animal arguably most like ourselves.

Same here. The coyotes seem to know the farm truck and tend to make tracks.

No magic, just more and deeper reality. :) Spent time hunting and doing photos in parts of Africa with lions, and parts they’ve been exterminated. There’s something about taking a .375 on your shoulder when you walk off from camp to relieve yourself in the morning, I’ve never felt more alive taking a ####. North coast rivers during the salmon have the vibe too.

Apex predators keep a place wild. The sheer amount of exposure to apex predators, by volume, was one of the things that sold me on Zimbabwe, and sold my clients in BC on the north coast. Wolves howling still do it for me too. It’s APOTA.

Totally depends where the coyotes are. The local grazing pasture they run at first sight of humans. On my property they just kinda trot away because I seldom shoot them.
