I often get clients asking me tonnes of questions regarding spotting scopes, tripods, and how much to spend.

My best answer for them is buy the best you can afford at YOUR price point/ budget/ allowance. :)

My second best answer is , FIND the best looking glass for YOUR price point/ budget / allowance; and that’s usually after trying as many scopes as you can on the firing line at your KD (known distance) or rectangular range.

My third best answer is : FIND a Bushnell SpaceMaster or SpaceMaster II on the EE Forums or Fakebook Marketplace or Kijiji for $100 or thereabouts.

Have a look at this SpaceMaster II that I found on Kijiji for $100 including the tripod. I’ve since sold it to one of my clients getting into the game. What’s cool is that the glass is japanese from the seventies and it’s hard to find good quality glass these days under the $700 mark (give or take). :nest:

Yeah, it’s been previously loved and not abused. Better yet, if you find estate / cottage sales, chances are the former owner was a gentle birdwatcher. That’s a good thing…..

This spotting scope happened to come with a Japanese eyepiece and it’s variable. Way cool…. 20x to 45 x . What a surprising find.

And at this $100 price point it did not come with any lens covers or soft case as the current Zhinese scopes with ED Glass come with these days.

So I did the next best thing with my 15 x to 45 x Spacemaster, I wrapped and taped 1/8” packing foam around the body. Then I proceeded to wrap things in Veterinarians wrap. Let me back up a bit first. I sourced some Butler Creek #43 objective lens covers for the front.

Then I found (Ellwood Epps) a correct fitting eyepiece cover that replaced the factory rubber eyepiece bumper (tossed back in original box).

Back to the Vet wrap, I circled the scope body a couple of times and then finished off with some shock cord (Amazon or EBay) so that I could decorate with burlap strips. Coyotes won’t see me, but I gotta ensure they don’t “wind” smell me.

Okay, this ain’t no Razor Gen 2 spotting scope (like my Gen 1 Razor 20-60-85mm) but this spotter SpaceMaster is my Parents, biathlon range spotter so It’s All Good!

Another look at my Spacemaster…

In conclusion, don’t overlook good optics from Japan that’s several decades old. The best part about good brands is that they often come with a lifetime warranty!

Sometimes you have to improvise, but It’s All Good!

I hope this helps your newbie that you are mentoring. You are mentoring new shooters aren’t you?? :nest:

Keep helping the newbies!!

Cheers,

Also used by Canadian snipers with the C3 rifle.

Funny you should mention that fact…..

Many of the Brigade Teams at CFSAC/CAFSAC are running that Spacemaster scope family , especially with their factory Bushnell tripods.

You just reminded me that I’ve always admired how that kit has stood up to all that use/abuse/employment over the decades. Nothing fancy. It just works.

The drawback with any Bushnell Spacemaster is the lack of a neoprene scope cover (enlighten me if you know where I can find one) or easier to use lens covers/caps. This family of glass spotters is so old, nobody makes a ‘Multicam’ cover for them. I can only wish. And that’s why I went with the Vet wrap. That was shown to me by Callsign22 up in Garrison Petawawa. Improvise, adapt, well…. You guys know the rest.

Another drawback, nobody makes a carrying case, but more improvisation is called for. We can make do. Actually I don’t mind. It’s giving me another reason to hit up stores like Winners or Marshalls or Cabelas or Princess Auto or Peavey. Now my browsing will be fun. I’m on a mission , now!!

Alright. Back to helping the newbies for me!!

Cheers!

Another use I find for my old Bushnell Spotter is to take to the range to loan to those fellows shooting their 1 box a year of factory ammo who want to go down range every 4-5 shots to check their targets:bangHead:
My first thought was to bring it along to sell but you have convinced me to keep it. Now to come up with a cheap case for it. Be sure to let us know what you come up with!

Found a fixed 20x on kijji for $60 and think its great for the money. Id like to see what the 20 - 45 power would be like

Im also in the market for a spotting scope. Someone is selling one here but its not a mk2 like yours. Would you recommend it for a 100$? Or should I got with something else with a budget of 250-300$? I really have no experience with spotting scope.

Am I the only one that started checking Kijiji for one?

After I read this thread I went on to some of the buy and sells looking for a spotting scope (not looking for a space master in particular). The first listing I saw was for a spacemaster. Its in pretty rough shape though.

Cool thread Barney! I am in the market for a spotting scope and this post gave me somthing to think about.
BTW, where did you manage to find the MC tape?

The Multi Cam Vet Wrap can be found at Amazon for sure, shipping might be a killer. Shop carefully. Once in a while Cabela’s will have Multi cam pattern. McNett is the maker of the Veterinarian Wrap. Good luck shopping for this brand, it works really well.

Cheers !

I would like to upgrade to a spotter with a reticle in it for calling missed shots. So far there aren't allot out there. Would like a grid as opposed to one found in a Bushnell with a Tee type reticle.

I've never personally seen or used a spotting scope with a reticle. When I'm out with buddies we just make calls based on how many "target sizes" we miss by (ie: You are 1 target left and half a target low)

There was a Canadian army green scope case for the Bushnell as issued to Canadian snipers. I have only ever seen a picture and don't know if any survived into private hands. If you have one let me know I need it to complete my C3 kit....

Spacemaster was my first spotting scope, lots of good memories taking that on hunting trips. That's an incredible value for an older scope with good glass for it's time.

I have my original issued Aladdin Stainless steel thermos and cover from 1977 when I landed in Calgary with the 1VP Charlie Coy Green Machine. LOL

These days, that thermos comes out hunting with me but it’s carried in my backpack. And that insulated cover might just get ‘chopped’ up and repurposed as an OD green cover for the Space Master. A future thread on this forum, I guess…
Ha ha ha ha ha ha

All good sewing machine fun, moving forward. Time to find some OD Green tough fabric to complete this project…..

Thanks for the inspiration.

Cheers!
