5.56 in a 223 Remington Model 7

Where could I look , or does anyone know if I can SAFELY use up some 5.56 in a 223 stamped early Remington Model 7 ?

When I say early , I mean it's the version with factory sights and uses a 3 hole scope base

Here we go!

Bill Wylde who designed the Wylde chamber, a friend to many on CGN and who passed away last weekend, did the heavy thinking for you already. Please spare yourself the internet anguish and read up on his chamber dimensions. In a word my humble anonymous internet opinion is, yes. Dimensionally the differences are negligible between the two cartridges and not so significant that a bolt action would ever notice.

It's not surplus, I ordered 300 by accident, clicked the box to the left instead of the right on the website.

I've shot 5.56 out of a 223 model 700...I just was being cautious as the 7 is lighter weight in the receiver area

Why? Because a bunch of people who have mindlessly accepted a "known fact" keep mindlessly stating and restating the thing "everyone knows" that not a single one of them has actually tried or investigated ..... kind of like you have just done.

The Model 7 was also made in 243 and 308W. Cartridges that are considerably larger diameter than the 223, meaning the barrel is thick enough to withstand a larger diameter case, then the even thicker walls left behind after creating the 223 chamber will be even stronger. I think its safe.

The whole 223 vs 556 thing has been WILDLY overblown and just repeated endlessly by people who have never researched the issue or actually tried to see if it is true. People who know nothing about firearms design or manufacture .... facts which don't seem to prevent them talking sh!t endlessly.

And, to add, the breeching systems of the 700 and the Seven are exactly the same. The bolt heads are the same, the receiver diameters are the same. Even the barrels interchange.
 
Fire one over the chrono and see. Totally depends on the chamber and ammo combination.

If you get excessive pressure you’ll see high velocity. If you get normal velocities, fire away.
 
If it chambers easily, the rifle will indeed handle the bit of extra pressure, if the ammo is even loaded to maximum. If you have to force it into the chamber, pressure spikes are a possibility.
