Mossberg mini 510 dowel in magazine tube

So I finally got my snap caps I ordered for setting the trigger pull and checking things after cleaning and lube. I noticed I was not able to stuff the snap caps in at all, maybe 1/2” max. So I checked around online and figured out they install a wooden dowel in the magazine tube. So I took it apart and has a look see and sure as heck there was a wooden dowel I could see, so I jiggled the gun around until enough stuck out to grab with some pliers and long and be gold out she came.

All though there was only one rubber o-ring on it, the back one that is apparently there either wasn’t installed from factory OR it came off when sliding the dowel out as it was VERY tight to slide it out when I did. Should I disassemble to take it out, or will it function as needed without issues or cause issues ….??

The dowel is there to limit the shotgun to 3 rounds( 2 in the tube, 1 in the chamber) for hunting. If you aren’t going to be hunting with it then leave the dowel out and you should be able to fit 4 in the tube and one in the chamber. You MUST have the dowel in if hunting.
PS- run something down the tube if you think the rubber grommet is still in there

Ya I know it’s there for hunting which is dumb in my opinion lol, but I wasn’t even able to get half of one round into the tube when it was in there. Yea I’m sure there is another rubber o-ring in there as most have two rubber rings on the wooden dowel and only the one came out and the back one decided to stay in there somewhere lol
 
Why bother asking? If you suspect something not right, take it apart and check.

May sound like a dickish comment, but you don't need permission to take apart your gun. By the time you posted this, you could easily remove the threaded end cap, and dump the spring and follower.

Well once I remove the threaded cap, the end of the magazine tube is only threaded for the threaded bolt/cap. Literally it’s just big enough for the dowel to make it through the hole

EDIT. - never mind as I was able to see down the hole with my tiny flashlight and was able to grab it with a small wire bent into a tiny hook. Not a Dickish comment lol I’m just a new gun owner is all live and learn :)

You got your issue sorted but for future reference I can easily unthread the magazine tube from the receiver of my Mossberg 500. Some may be installed tighter though so I wouldn’t try and force it without the right tools for the job.

You can’t do this on all shotguns though. Remington 870 magazine tube is soldered in place but then again removing the magazine cap gives full access to the magazine tube, unlike most Mossberg’s (590 is the exception).

Yes the gentleman I bought it from at the show when he assembled it he spun the magazine cap WAY to tight, luckily I have very strong hands lol. I put it on not TIGHT but good and SNUG :)
 
I'm glad you figured it out. Some people are more familiar with open-ended magazine tubes and perhaps have never dealt with a capital-T tight Mossberg 500 tubular magazine.

"Duh, take it apart..." makes sense when things are easy to disassemble, but less so when they aren't.

I think you misunderstood me. I’m not referring to the cap, the entire tube can be removed from the receiver. This allows you to remove the spring, follower and the dowel easily.

Ah yes, I know that. Just not sure if I need a special tool as it threads into the receiver. As I was not able to turn it out by hand either

Ah ok. Yeah, if you can’t do it by hand I wouldn’t force it. You’d need to make some blocks and probably an insert so as to not deform the tube. Regardless, you got it sorted. Just some UFI as you mentioned being a new gun owner.

I believe the tube is thread locked into the aluminum receiver, at least it is the the 590A1.

I believe it to be thread locked in the receiver, I also believe the thread lock is in there for two reasons, a) to lock the tube in place so it doesn't unscrew when the nut is being taken off. b) to put a medium in between the dissimilar metals of aluminum and steel.

To take it out would require heat on the receiver and a belt/strap type wrench. I'm not familiar with aluminium tempering, but I know heat is bad. How much heat before the "bad" threshold is met is no doubt a science that I'm ignorant about. Therefore...it's in the "or" catagory.

Maybe they do. All I can tell you is that my old 500 is easily removed by hand. It’s fairly old though as it predates the one way screw used in the safety.

Well if I ever have issues with it, I’ll take it to a gunsmith if I can find one when the time if ever rises
 
Honestly I cannot see needing to take the magazine tube off for general maintenance. So not sure why putting in so much effort, for something that does not need to come off.
