Is 7mm the sweet spot for a long range big game Hunter?

I had a Tikka t3 Synthetic Stainless in 7RM. Once I switched the factory recoil pad to a Limbsaver it was definitely tolerable to shoot around a box (20) in a sitting without ill effects. I didn’t like how cheap the stock felt. The laminate version is much nicer. The accuracy and action were great tho. For the price point it’s a great choice.

Except that the Berger offerings, as far as a hunting bullet go, have already been drawn and quartered on other threads as being a poor choice... So that certainly wouldn't be a good a good recommendation...;)

When limited to off the shelf offerings, this is gets to be, well, limiting! Still would look at the 7 PRC, as it is backed by the same hype machine as the 6.5, offers 175 bonded/locked bullets at great speed, and will have a smattering of great factory rifle offerings as well.

A Winchester model 70 with a white maple stock.

Now that's a purdy rifle.

Yes purdy rifle indeed. Only problem is the ones you typically see in the gun shops do not have the beautiful curly/quilted figuring as the one in the photo. I have seen several of these in various stores and the ones I saw were maple but looked like a maple 2x4 with no figuring in the wood. Not a big deal if you are not fussy about it I guess.

As someone who doesn't currently own a 7mm/0.284 cal cartridge I'm starting to see the attraction to them after reading up on their ballistics.

High ballistic coefficients, high sectional density, close range energy comparable to 30 cal's and lower felt recoil vs 30 cal's....what's the catch?

I've been on the hunt for a long range hunting cartridge that will be more efficient down range than my .308s and 30.06s. I've been comparing magnums in the 338, 30 cal and 7mm categories as well as the new PRCs.

I think I've come to the conclusion that 7mm Rem Mag is about as good as it's going to get when you consider ballistics, recoil, costs etc.

What are the downsides to 7mm Rem Mag?

I'm looking to build a 8-9 lbs hunting rifle including rings and scope for reaching out 400m and beyond.

Considering rifles from Bergara, Tikka, Sako, Winchester etc.

Define Long Range Hunting first. MPBR to 600 will cover it. Beyond that call it Extended Long Range Hunting (ELRH). Know that most long range hunting proficiency is MPBR to 450 yards, most guys fall off after that, then a moderate amount of hunters are reliable killers 450 to 600, and very few immortals can consistently kill past 600. A lot of guys who shoot past 600 but very few can kill consistently past that. Usually means they are carrying afield way too much equipment, set up, and everything else that's required for precise elrh target shooting, they went past the point of diminishing returns in regards to 'hunting'.

Next, once you've looked at that with some humility, start with the bullets you'd like to use on game, then you can find the cartridge that will drive them in the velocity windows for those bullets within you predetermined real world hunting distances. Bullets of many calibers will do the jobs, no need to get hung up on a diameter. Placement trumps displacement. There's a ton of other factors to consider that are more important than the diameter. Availability, recoil, cost, etc. are all part of the equation. You can be really efficient or wildly inefficient in your choices, it's fun, and your call.

As I say to the kids all the time...make good choices. ;)

The 7mm REM Mag is an Excellent cartridge. ! I have shot game with one since 1972…. I have 2 rifles still in it . All With hand loads .IT Needs to be hand-loaded as most factory ammo is VERY SLOW ! just Lab radar it and see the poor FPS numbers ! JMO .

My 64 REM M700 is gonna be rebarreled and chambered in the new Modern 7 mag cartridge - the 7mm PRC . and it will be WAY MORE BETTER ! :p;) RJ

Russ I beg to differ. Personally I have had excellent success with Bergers in hunting situations, but like all thing everyone has their own opinion and experiences.
For decades "everyone" claimed SMK's were useless for hunting, yet whoa and behold many of us found they worked well in certain circumstances. The Hornady guys lost their poop on me when I expressed my displeasure at them discontinuing their A Max line of bullets. Best hunting bullet I ever used for LR hunting.
YMMV

Have you tried the ELDM on game, and noticed any difference between it and the amax?

Not yet but plan to. From what I have seen and read they work well but I have no personal experience with them yet.
Videos comparing the ELD-M and ELD-X on ballistic gel do not show any major difference in penetration or wound channel.

It's not me you have to convince, Rick! I've used them for years with success as well. Merely repeating what was said previously. Drawn and quartered as being a poor choice.
And yes... everyone is entitled to their opinion, except opinions aren't facts.
Remember when the A-Max box used to say they were recommended for hunting...and then it didn't? The results sure didn't change!
