I have a Defiance 308 BF Action sleeping in my safe and Bartlein 6.5 blank, want to try something new , have a 308 and 6.5x47 rifles right now and very happy with both, can always sell my spare 6.5 blank and go 6BR, heard that this caliber is easy to tune, lots of components available but have no idea where to start like barrel twist and barrel length. Max of 500 yards but mostly 100-300 yards bench shoots, no PRS or any competitive shooting, want to but just don’t have the time. Bergers, Lapua and SMK are my preferred bullets but which bullet weight is ideal for my purpose and most common in the Canadian market , thanks

300 meters is as short as I shoot with my 6mmBR, but I always use either a 105 or 108 bullet from 300 to 1,000 meters.
4895 and Varget are what I have always used for powder, and either Hornady, Lapua or Berger bullets .
In 6 different rifles I have never had a problem getting a 6mmBR to shoot well.
Barrels are normally 1:8's or 1:7.5 You could likely use a shorter 24-26" barrel with no issues at all, I use longer barrels however.

Iike to err on the side of caution so when in doubt go faster!
1:8 should be more than adequate, however .
I run my 1:8 6's right out to 1K from 300 with no issues, 243, 6mmRem AI, 6mmBR

I have an IBI chambered barrel in 6BR. It's a 1:7.5 and is 26" long with a target crown. It's by far the most accurate caliber I own. I shoot 105 VLD, 105 hybrids and 68 grain flat base target bullets. It runs them all without issue. The 68s are the most accurate out of it even though it's a fast twist

If 105-107gr loads are tuned to your rifle, and you can deal with wind, there's no prob hitting targets at 600-1000.
Shoot one if you can. Delightful.

1:7.5 twist for my 6BR.
I run Lapua brass, Varget and 105 grain Berger Hybrids. I have heard it said that if this combination dont shoot well (30 grains of Varget specifically - note, start low and work up to verify) then something is wrong.

after some few readings will go with the 6BR, can stay away with additional process like neck turn and fire forming. Want to make it simple. And thanks for all the inputs, opinions are all welcome , keep it coming, will be so helpful also for others thinking of trying the caliber
Mine has a 1-8 barrel, is really easy to load for. 107 Sierras work very well. - dan

I recently started playing with a 6BR and love it.
I went with an IBI 24" 1:8 twist 1.25" and wow, fantastic.
I started with Lapua brass and 105gr Barnes Match Burners, also from Prophet River and while only testing things out at 100 meters so far, very happy

I broke from tradition as of late and shot the 6mm at 200, because the local Legion Sponsors a steel match at our range frm 200 to 1,000 meters.
This is a 2MOA plate at 200 meters, five shots on it.
It may not seem much to some, but I shoot with irons and sling, not a front rest and scope, the hardest part is seeing the danged steel through the aperture sights!
