well. best slug...any slug?

for a short barrel like 12.5" and 18"....what slugs would people recommend?

confuzzled about sabot...rifled...and stuff.

If i have a smoothbore, do i have to use sabot slugs? or rifled slugs? or huh?

Do not use Sabot slugs, they are for rifled barrels.

Use rifled slugs. Winchester and Federal are about the best.

Don't rule out Remington Sluggers. Although I haven't shot them from an 870, I have tried them in my 1100 with a 21" smoothbore slug barrel and an IC choke. The barrel is cantilevered with a cheap tasco scope 3-9x32mm Pronghorn. Off the bench my best group was 3 1/4" at 100 yards! The Sluggers were 2 3/4".

Call me crazy but I like the way the Magnum X Winchesters shoot over the Federals. Somehow the Winchesters have a better recoil feel but the Federal is just crude. The X Winchesters go 1760 FPS or something too so they ain't "mild"

Challenger Magnum 2-3/4 slugs worked the best out of my 18" barrel, and I am trying out a raft of slug options through my 14" this weekend, and I can let you know. The Challenger has a velocity of 2075fps (a little less out of a super short barrel) and harder slugs...

Haven't been able get hold of Brenneke's, but I'll put another vote up for the Challengers. Under 3" groups at 100. From another thread, apparently they penetrate very well too.

if your 870 can take screw in choke tubes, you can get a rifled tube and give sabots a try. IMHO ,penetration is not a problem with any slugs, rifled or sabot, it's accuracy and the amount of drop at longer ranges.

yup we have a winner :sniper:

X 3 here, I used this German slug on a wild boar, and he croaked at 75 yards from one 2 3/4, 1 1/8 ounce Brenneke Rotweill.

Never left the spot, demised in less than 30 seconds, with a double lung hit.

Slug exited & never recovered, too hard to find in the deep slowbank.

PS, lots of drop in my iron sighted 12 gauge shotgun, about 7 inches....

His "handsome" head now decorates my recroom.....

Cheers

I can think of at least a dozen guys who like the Challengers ... a lot !

I personally have never used the Challengers, so I feel unqualified to comment.
But if you have hunter freinds with good results on deer well, then its very good for deer....

The absolute worst performing slug I found at the range and would never take to the field on big game, were the Federal Classic of foster style.

Regardless of I/C & tested also in F/C, 20 gauge barrel, my "groups" were literally 12 to 14 inches at 30 yards!?!

+1 for Challengers on the range. I like them alot. Canadian, readily available, great speed, good accuracy with nice trajectory. My 18" IC throws them best at 100.

Brenneke for the woods. ... and nothing else.

Might want to check out the local Canadian Tire, I got a decent deal on Winchester grey box hollow point rifed slugs, few weeks ago.
