Hey everybody I'm new here and I'm also new to hunting along with my 14 year old son. He really wants to get a shotgun and I'm looking for some advice on what to get him as a beginner gun but something can use going into the future. For now all we're going to be hunting is Turkey. Thank you in advance for all your advice and help.

really depend on the size of your son.
i was shooting 12ga at 12 yrs, my cousin was 16 and couldnt handle it.

20 ga is fine, 12ga has way more availability and choices for ammo.

Cooey 840 12 gauge or 20 gauge. Cheap to purchase, easy to use and will work fine on turkey since you're likely to get one shot off only.

He can go crazy and rattle can camo it up himself and if it doesn't turn out, well then strip and start over. He'll love having a project gun to work on. Good memories to be had here.

Maybe a over under shotgun. Some have a shorter or adjustable stock and 12, 20 guage barrels as a set. If get 12g and is to much could always use couple 12/20g adapters.

What price range are you contemplating ?

A Remington 870 20 gauge pump is a great starter shotgun. Versatile, easy to handle. PM me if you end up thinking about that model. I have a used one in great condition that is just collecting dust.

Well if you would be hunting upland birds I'd say a 28 gauge but that's not a good choice for turkeys.

So I'd say a 12 gauge since he's 14 and you could start him out with low brass shells and work your way up to the heavy loads.

And good luck on your hunt.

If you get him a 12 ga break action, don't get him an alloy receiver, even one of those alloy Turk Inertia Semis will beat the crap out of you in short order. Light weight in pretty much any 12 ga isn't fun to shoot. I have a Mossberg 940 Turkey, it's not too bad shooting Low recoil 00, still not sure what a full power load will be like, waiting on my IC choke so I can see how it shoots slugs.

Age is less important than his size and weight. Let us know that info as well. Is he a 14-year old farm boy who's been tossing hay bales for 3 years? Or hasn't hit puberty yet? Makes a big difference.

And turkey hunting is a very different format of hunting compared to other wingshooting disciplines. Hopefully he'll want to expand his interest into ducks, grouse, and geese.

Browning BPS 20ga. He'll own it forever.

That would be a sweet gift.
Dad made me purchase the Franchi 12 gauge auto back in that age time when I
insisted on the A-5.
The guilt I laid on him that cold frick'in day walking the tracks from Savona on the north
side of Loopylake.
Ol Frank kept jamming up on me.
I had it by the bawrill and was going to wing it into the lake.
In 1984 he bawt me a new A-5 Mag.
Still owner.

Yeah, spend the peso's and git the kid the A-5.
A 12 gauge might work iff'in you can find a light.
The recoil mechanism should damper it down nicely.

The thing about 12gage is the variety of ammunition. They make some very light shooting loads he can start off with.
