'Hunting' reactive steel targets.

What thickness & grade of steel did you use for your Buff. I have a piece of 5/16 mild steel that is 9 x 16 ft that I am contemplating cutting a life size buff out of it for just cast bullet (1600 fps max prob.)shooting at minimum of 700 yrds but hopefully 1/2 mile.

My original plan is to cut the thing into joinable sections of under 100 lbs each so it can be relocated easily by a couple people with a pick-up. I'm sure the slugs wont penetrate that thickness at that range but do you think they will pock mark it ??

Mine is 1/4” mild steel, and stops cast bullets like nothing. With enough hits it starts to curl up a bit, which is easily fixed by turning it around. It’s only been flipped once in quite a few years though.

It is easy to move by throwing it on a sled trailer. A couple of strong guys can carry it a ways and hang it. When it got turned an enterprising friend clipped a vise-grip at the balance point, hooked up a come-along, spun it around and did up the chains again. Did it himself, sort of one of those work smarter not harder kind of things. :)

Thats what i was hoping to hear. The warping thing should be easily repaired with the easily handled sections I plan ...turn it over & beat with a hammer.

This thread got the gears turning (albeit slowly)... reminiscing with the family about best hunts ever, pinging away in the woods, and then dreaming of the summer and fall to come. Unanimous verdict from wife and daughter was our annual grouse hunt takes the cake, which got me thinking about simulation so we don't have to wait till fall:

Gonna start looking for a remnant of AR400/AR500 we can hopefully pick up cheap...;)

Best,

Brobee

Talk about a rich easter weekend - had the family out at the farm while the snow is starting to let go. Tried the dino targets for the first time, and they are all my kids and wife can talk about now, so much so that we melted down the internet looking at Dr. Scott Hartman's work on skeletaldrawings.com, checked out All Yesterdays, and then my oldest Julia proclaimed it would be impossible to hunt a spinosaurus as she whipped out the black markers:

Not sure I will be able to get them excited about grouse again, perhaps once fall comes and we're craving a taste of the woods...;)

Yes, Brobee is the man!

Only thing I'm missing is a cougar, sheep & mountain goat... Not sure any of those were ever made?

I was fortunate to be able to purchase a rather large quantity of Brobees worlds greatest targets. I lucked out, found a new friend as well as a source of truly awesome targets. Bought some one of a kinds and some of his own personal use targets. There is a cougar. Ill put them all up and take pics to post. Think I have approximately 20 in total. Moose,Elk,Buffalo,Muleys,Whitetails,Wolf,Grizzly,Black Bear,Coyotes,Big Foot,Cougar and Yeti(White Bigfoot). They are so much fun and as stated will last a lot of lifetimes. I painted mine with colours to make them as real as possible. Got not bad with just rattle cans.

I bought them at first, to support a young Entrepreneur. Once I received the first set of coyote and white tail I was hooked. Once my shooting buddies and I set them up and started shooting them, the love of these targets grew imensley. I was fortunate to purchase a fairly large quantity. My goal is to start a more hunting oriented shoot without a lot of the fancy equiptment and generous time slots. No distance will be known and only a bipod will be allowed. Just like real hunting youll not know how far the targets are. Lots of classes for the different participants. I shoot ORPS and CRPS and its great for many reasons but not much like real hunting unless blinds over bait, which is fine. Just wanted it to be more like walking thru the woods and theres a buck or whatever and youve got 30 seconds to build a position or freehand and take your shot(s). Also have a 250 foot cable with a coyote thats about 20"x8" running down an angle with the speed constantly increasing. Having to figure what leade(changing constantly with the increase in speed) and picking shots thru a mature bush with Oak,Maple,Hickory,Ash,Hemlock and White Pine plus Cedar and Iron wood amongst others is tough to say the least. Hoping to have a shoot late spring or early summer. Should be a hoot.

That’s a great idea. Definitely a thought I had when they came out

Wish there was a centrefire PRS style event with hunting rifle setups only. But, knowing how these things work guys always start to “game” the system.

Thats a hell of a good idea.

I also have been planning on making a big buffalo target for long range bpcr but the price of steel has kept me from doing so

There is a bunch of us BPCR shooters here in Manitoba that are looking for a spot on private land to have a gong shoot ( sagebrush long shots style) we normally travel to Bethune Saskatchewan and Carberry Manitoba for BPCR Silhouette matches but the guys are getting older.. Looking for a casual shooting environment bunch of guys /gals sitting around with spotting scopes taking turns smacking steel ...dry camping haul out what you bring in . know of any spots ?? PM me

I think it would be cool if you had varying times to engage the target, but we’re not aware of when the buzzer would beep. Simulate the unpredictable behaviour of live animals

Thats a great idea. Just like the real thing, you never know when or where or two quick moves to never be seen again! Love it. Finally got some spare time to post some pics of the targets. I have a Black bear and an abominable snow man plus two more coyotes and two more Whitetails but theyre presently deployed in a woodlot with the 250foot coyote cable! If you guys ever get the chance ,I wouldnt hesitate to buy these targets.View attachment 673672View attachment 673673View attachment 673674View attachment 673675

Oh man, totally looking forward to the pics!

If you ever want to join us for some fun Im sure my shooting buddies wouldnt mind a new face. This offer is for anyone in the area. We have three different spots for rimfire shooting with targets from 25-452yards. Farther if you want but 425 is fairly challenging to hit with consistency. If your new and would like to learn these guys are as good as they come. We have a lot of fun. We are located 45 minutes from Kingston or Stitsville along the 401 corridor.

Very kind of you! Thank you for that invitation. And thanks for posting pics of your reactive targets!

Cheers
