Was watching a YouTube video on the history and evolution of the AK series rifle. I was wondering, the equivalent to the AK in Canada we can purchase is the Norinco Type 81. What would be the equivalent to the AK 74 which is chambered in 5.45x39 (similar to 5.56 NATO) instead of 7.62x39.

I am not aware of a firearm "equivalent to the AK 74 which is chambered in 5.45x39" being available in Canada.

Closest would be the Valmet M78, but you have to have deep pockets....

This whole equation makes no sense.

A Norinco Type 81 is not equivalent to an AK.

Norinco made the AK-84s which was just a semi-auto .223/5.56 version of the AK-47 so that's about as close to an AK-74 as we've had. Of course now they are prohibs.

He meant “equivalent” in the sense that the T81 is very visually and mechanically similar to the AK47, but not prohib. He’s asking if there are any other non-prohib guns that are visually similar, and chambered in the AK74’s 5.45

Why would you want to buy something like this? You can have one custom chambered from a type 81 if you have deep pockets. Anything is possible. Then you can start looking for ammo.

Another option is change of government system, those fat rats are not God sent, that's what ppl do around the world. Just saying that mag mods is not the only option. Clearly Ottawa march was not heard.
However steering back to topic - not .many things are chambered in this round, and AK family is verboten for peasants.

Correct, it is better than an AK.

I had one back in the day. It was a crappy little rifle that wasn't overly reliable. It wasn't unreliable but it would failure to feed every once in a while, way more so than any AR I've ever owned. There was absolutely nothing special about the 223 84S rifle.

The type 81 better than an AK,..?..against a Hungarian AKM,Valmet M76,or Galil ARM...absolutely not..
Never had any issue with the 84S,except the underfolders are a pita to shoot..

I still have my 84S (collecting cobwebs in the basement). I never found it unreliable but it flung brass further than any other gun I've ever owned plus it put a nice half moon crease in each case making them iffy for reloading which was why I bought it. At that time (early 90's) boxer primed 7.62x39 was very expensive and virtually all of the imported stuff was corrosive (which I hate using) so an AK shooting cheaper, reloadable .223 seemed like a good idea at the time.

I can't prove this but I think the problem was the Chinese just swapped the barrel, bolt and mags from 7.62x39 to .223 but didn't bother to alter the gas system. Since the .223 has considerably higher chamber pressure than the 7.62x39 the result was faster bolt movement causing more violent ejection. I intended to experiment with a heavier recoil spring and try altering the gas system but then the gun went prohib under C-68 so it became a moot exercise.

The Type 81 was designed to be a product improved AK.

Valmet and Galil aren't exactly AK's. They are Ferarri's that happen to look like AKs.

The ejection on mine was truly epic - broke a light bulb in the roof of the shooting point at Poco. First thing I was aware of was broken light bulb raining down on me at the firing point. I much preferred the 762 AK, the under folder bit you, but the recoil was manageable and it didn't make the bulbs above your head break. I used the 762 as my hiking companion, no one batted an eye lid in those days, and you could boonie bash with an AK with no issues. The 223's side folder was a way better stock than the under folder - same stock as the T81.

Ive seen reputable content creators on Utube produce some impressive groups (sub 2 moa) with high end brands like Veprs, Arsenal, Two River Arms etc. The AK design is appearently capable of it... (ik first hand that the CSA VZ certainly is) and id suspect a tightly built Type 81 would be as well if a premium manufacturer were to make one.

To keep it an apples to apples comparison, a premium manufacturer T81 would cost 3x what the Norinco does. Which then puts us into the obvious realm of a Mercedes is better than a Yugo.
