Would have been cheaper to stay home but......

Went to a gun show on the weekend, not to buy anything, just to look around and also to discuss a few things with our CFO. Figured that there was NO WAY anything that would interest me would be at a small town gun show in Alberta. Ended up picking up a new (to me) hunting rifle. A rather sweet little Alex Henry .500 BPE double. Hopefully I can find the time to work up a load before fall. It DID come with a box of loaded and the "recipe" for them but I am not sure about shooting someone else reloads. Will likely pull the bullets and check the powder charge or just recharge with the recipe to be sure of what I have. We will see.

Wow! Cheaper to stay home, in some ways perhaps but not others.

Pics or it didn't happen ;)

I just upload them at Postimages and paste the link in here between the tags
. I could do it for you if like.

Either way, great score! Looking forward to hearing the particulars of the load you shoot with it and how it does.

The Alex Henry records still exist if you want to get it looked up.
I have been looking on the net for a list or something that would determine the year of manufacture (just out of curiosity) I suspect 1880ish. I fond a registry of serial numbers but no corresponding manufacture dates. Te serial number is in the mid 3000's but I have no idea where that places it in the grande scheme of things, not that it matters, I am just curious.

Wow. Now that you have proven to yourself you can post pictures, I'd say a detailed photo essay on that gorgeous rifle would be appropriate, no?

Let me know what pics you would like to see and I will post them. A few things that I CAN tell you is that (and this may take the "AWE" out of it for some), it has been restocked so any "collector" value would be reduced considerably IMO which works for me because I was able to get, what I consider to be a spectacular gun at what I consider a reasonable price and I buy guns to shoot, not "collect". It has rebounding locks, bores are mint and I was TOLD (by the seller) that the barrels have been refinished but there are a few "blemishes" in the barrel finish and I will likely redo them at some point in the future so that the finish matches that of the stock AND to bring out the pattern better. It is missing the swivel studs which I would like to replace IF I can find a matching pair of period correct ones OR, if I can get some detailed photos and dimensions of period correct studs to make some replacements. I do not know who did the stock work but as someone that has stocked several guns myself I can tell you that whoever did this one did a spectacular job. The checkering is not perfect but is serviceable. According to the wear on the trigger guard tang where the serial number is AND the condition of the case (assuming that the case is original to the gun) this gun saw a LOT of use and explains the restock.
