For the folks using AR pattern mags in 7.62x39mm how much room is there inside the mag to seat a bullet out? Is it as tight inside with common FMJ as say, a Ruger Mini 30 mag?

Thinking hard on changing a Ruger Ranch over to AR pattern.

An AR mag will typically allow for a loaded .223 round plus max. a few thousands for clearance; 2.250" min. plus a bit more room (~2.260" - 2.265").

The problem with the AR box magazine is there is no taper back to front (in section), and the tapered round of the 7.62x39 has no support either to the side to side at the front of the mag, or top to bottom.
I've never seen an AR mag reliably feed 7.62x39 consistently, either equipped with a properly designed follower or not.

I've got no experience with the Ruger Ranch, never mind one equipped as you say, but any AR I've had or shot in that caliber was a frustrating experience.

Thank you, Beltfed. Thats kind of all I need to hear then.

Not too anxious to go from a mag that works great to one that doesn't.

Had a Robinson arms XCR-L years ago in 7.62X39 that fed flawlessly from a number of 10rd pistol magazines, can't remember who manufactured them but they were steel and labelled "XCR Micro Pistol 10rd" or something of the like. They were STANAG and there was never a hiccup with them through hundreds of rounds of Czech surplus.

+1

I have had zero issues running these mags with my MCR in 7.62x39. I had a couple of duramag’s that weren’t as flawless. Chalk it up to having the right mag.

I have thousands of rounds of 6.5 Grendel & 7.62x39 thru ArmaLite/ASC 10,20,30 round magazines w/o an issue in AR platforms.

OP,
Max cartridge OAL for most AR15 mags is 2.260"

I have converted my ranch to run off AR mags and have no feeding issues at all. Very positive feeding from the mags is all I have encountered. i have not started reloading for my 7.62x39 Ranch gun yet but do not see any issues popping up in feeding.

CMMG, they eliminated the problem by going to AK mags in an ar-15. Not sure if it helps or if a guy could even find CMMG parts

I have run over 100k 7.62x39 through the XCR mags without feeding problems. In AR15s and mag well converted SKS rifles.

You can’t just stuff x39 smmo into a 5.56 magazine, of course.

There isn’t much room to seat bullets out really long but I don’t really see the appeal of that with the x39 cartridge anyway

The appeal is the 110 and 120 grain Barnes and Hornady bullets made specifically for the 300 Bkackout being just a bit too long for a Mini 30 mag when loaded in the x39 cartridge...

You have shot over 100 000 rounds (in any caliber, never mind 7.62x39) through AR mags (never mind the brand or maker)

Without one stoppage attributed to magazines?

I'm still wet behind the ears, but I have been shooting ARs for over 35 years and you have to be the first human I'm aware of that has fired even a fraction of that number and not had a stoppage attributed to magazines.

The XCR pistol magazines I used worked exceptionally well. I can't say that there was absolutely zero problems, there is always going to be problems that pop up now and then but magazine related feeding problems were few and far between. I had about 50 of these magazines and was very confident in them.

Like any magazine, they will eventually wear and springs get weak and reliability is compromised, but that's not really the fault of the magazine, it's just wear and tear.

I had 4 SKS with the HiCal mag conversions done to them and I had 3 AR15's chambered in x39. Magazine problems were never a worry. My biggest complaint was that x39 bolts broke more frequently than the 5.56 bolts, which I always assumed was because of the larger bolt face leaving less material on the bolt.

Years ago I bought a 12 pack of XCR pistol mags with the 7.62x39 followers (Can-Ammo deal? - can't remember), but running those in my AR - I could only load 7 or 8 rounds for any semblance of reliability.

Did other brands of 7.62x39 magazines function well? Was it only the XCR magazines?
