At least you were prepared . Would u have tried it with a 6.5 let's say and if not , why ? and let's all assume he can shoot to 350-400 yards before the wolves come out ...lol
Blakeyboy you make me feel overgunned lol. Bad enough these days I refer to the 6.5CM as my "big rifle" just wait til I realize its overbore and I follow you down that Grendel rabbithole lol.
Honestly think if i wasn't so attached to the monos I would.
400 yards is a heck of a long shot for the average shooter!
Only if you are a moron and zero at 100 yards... zeroed at MPBR with a 150 grain at 2900 fps, the zero is at 300 yards, the drop at 400 is 10"... it doesn't drop 30" until 510 yards out.
You should think about making statemants like this before you post crap about people you do not know.He has to get close because he’s shooting way too much gun and found out trying for a 400 yard elk with something he closes his eyes before he yanks the trigger...absolute chip shot for the manbun. Then hang tight for a minute and get a wolf or two also. Elk could have been one and done but noooooo, the Norma mag sounds like just the right amount of whack lol.
The truth and those who speak it are never popular but it, and they, could care less.![]()
At the range, I'd try that all day long.
Shooting at an animal that might be moving as I'm aiming , flicking off safety and squeezing the trigger and I'm not chancing anything over 200 yards.
I know my limits and would be unethical of me me to try a shot at a further distance.
Wow, right to the insults in one post.
I usually do 1" high at 100yds as that covers me for any shot 50yds to my comfort zone if 200 yards and it keeps me in MPBR.
I don't need to touche my scope or need any fancy reticles, plain old duplex fits the bill.
There's tens of thousands of people that still follow the 1" high at 100 rule.
That suits most of them that rarely see an open field shot last 200 yards
Sounds like a real low threshold to start calling each other stupid but not everyone tries to be pleasant either lol
If you know the range you can dial. Doesnt sound like it's worth calling someone retarded unless you wanna fight lol. Less than optimal sure. just my two bits
If you bump an elk at 100 you likely need to make a quick shot, but at 400, you most likely have time to range and set up for an accurate shot. Or develop a plan to stalk closer if terrain permits...
Every hunter knows his limits and ability, weather they adhere to that is another thing entirely.
For sure. If someone can reach the distance they want to shoot that way, cool. Or put a dab of paint pen on your turret or...whatever.
If it works it works.
You also said that you wouldn't take a shot in the field over 200 yards. That's completely you prerogative, but meaningless in the context of the discussion that we're having here. In the context of a 400 yard elk rifle, zeroing at 100, or even sighting in 1" high at 100, is stupid. With the aforementioned 28 Nosler at 350 yard zero keeps you in an 8" kill zone to 400. Zeroing that rifle at 100 would be stupid.
You're not stupid, but your participating in this discussion with your clearly articulated 200 yard limit, is stupid.
Sounds like a real low threshold to start calling each other stupid but not everyone tries to be pleasant either lol

The guy kills more animals in the course of his day than you do in an entire hunting season,is an excellent shot and has African experience on dangerous game as well as North American game from Gophers to moose
Cat
was my winky face not working? did I quote him or the guy responding to him? blanket statement tongue in cheek, I may or may not be correct on him specifically, but the statement is correct for most, that's a chip shot with a lot of lighter hitting stuff these days...why wasn't it a chip shot for him? do we really wanna question him? if I did I would have quoted him directly, but I didn't so it was for effect and point making, maybe he should shoot something he can shoot better at 400
there I did it again, stay calm, grab sense of humour...we will get through these painful truths together
IMO, anyone who cant handle a little recoil shouldn't be shooting at any game at 400 yards, it's quite simple really.
