.22 Calibre Action Shooting 64B Project?

One of the members at our club has suggested that we look at organizing a two-gun action rimfire match; most of us have .22 pistols, and .22 semi-auto rifles. Good practice for those who shoot centerfire, and low cost ammo wise.

My problem is that I don't own a Semi.

I'm presently looking for a model 64b project gun to use to build a more tactical friendly rifle that is economical to buy.

Why the 64B?
  • Lots of them kicking around
  • Magazines are readily available and priced right
  • Proven design
  • Not limited to 10 rounds, and not reliant on an aftermarket hit or miss conversion to get around 10 round capacity

Problem is I can't find a "project" 64 despite running ads here and everywhere else I can think of.

If anyone knows of one, please reply to my ad in the EE rimfire wanted to buy here: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/2368787-64B-Semi-automatic-rifle-for-a-project

Has anyone here tackled anything like this before; I'm certainly interested in seeing what other have done. (Like the people whot work with the Scorpio rifles).

Please share your ideas.:)

There are lots of them around because they are cheap. Doesn't mean they are good. I chose my 10/22 over my 64 because it was better in every way.

We had a guy that ran a 64 at a rimfire shoot we had over Easter and it kept on jamming. None of the 10/22s running bx10 mags jammed.

Is there a reason you're stuck on the 64b? Savage is still making this pattern and they're not very expensive to buy new

I feel bad about butchering a new gun, and yes, I have seen them recently for $175.

Honestly I would not bother. They are not a great gun. The only good thing about them is the price. The rest of it is lacking.

Accurate enough for a rapid fire course at ranges not more than 30 yards.

Last year, at our club on "National Range Day" I was working the Rimfire Rifle range, we had 3 stock Ruger 10/22s and one was less than a month old. Honestly, all three were jamming with alarming regularity. We had two 64s, one old with wood and a steel trigger guard, and the other new, all plastic. What ever was wrong with them. they ran impeccably, and hit paper at 25 yards for non shooters. Most wanted to shoot the various tacti-cool GSG guns; also frequent mis-feeds and jams. These were often frustrating for these new shooters because they were having trouble hitting the paper. The 10/22s were frustrating with their feeding issues. When I put either of the 64s in their hands or some of the old cooeys and CZs that were out there, they had a much nicer experience. I don't remember any of the 10/22s back in the 70's having any problems; the newer ones sure seem to.

Marlin 795, runs great and very accurate. Mine has zero issues and you can get 25 rd mags

I'm open to the 795, but have absolutely no experience with them. Not common at our club, but honestly, most newer members go with the pot-metal GSG pos guns. Thanks for the suggestion.

I understand your hesitation to butcher a new gun, but for the money I would personally not feel bad about making a project from a brand new gun that costs often less than $200. Alternatively you could get the Savage 64 Precision which sounds like it would fit your use quite nicely. Or if you have the budget for it, the Derya TM22 has been getting good reviews and I have personally run 1000 rounds through mine with maybe a handful of failures to fire but that is through no fault of the gun, just the nature of bulk rimfire ammo.

I’ve got a savage 64f only thing I’ve done to it is an extended bolt handle( there’s a guy on the EE that sells em) if I can get it to run reliably I’d probably do more with it, I’ve got two 10 round mags and two 20 round mags, not sure if it was the cheap ammo or the gun but in each mag I could only get through 3 rounds without a malfunction, personally even with the 10 round mags I’d go with a 1022 but for less than half the price the 64 is still a good buy

Sorry, but I got a 64 for exactly the same end use and gave up on it. The mags made today are just crappy. Feeding was far worst then ones I have had years back... trigger was more SKS'ish then I remembered.

I just set up a 10/22 and it is so much better.

Yea, I've seen that too. With mine, it's that it doesn't like some ammo, especially with the 20-round mag.

In fact I had that issue at the range a couple weeks ago with some bulk Federal stuff -- it had feeding problems every few shots. Luckily I had a couple random boxes of CCI Blazer in the bottom the range bag. I loaded those and all was well.

Considering what I paid for the gun, I have no complaints. It's been plenty of fun out to 25 yards or so.

I too agree with them above citing the junkeenizz of them.
There have been 'nuff around'ear and the residency has been short.

Yur'bout to venture into something that is going to be fun.
Make it fun and git something decent to butcher up.

Splurge a bit.
Go collect some cans or sell some Scout cookies.

Just found this in the EE.
So..... $200 without the shipping.
Don't think yer gonnah dew much better'n this.

If you find out you don’t like the trigger here’s something that can help with the trigger pull. I have one in my 64b

And as fightinghamster mentioned look into an extended charging handle i think that’s a required upgrade. Lots if options for extended charging handles are available from DIP

That's a great idea -- my kids always struggle with that charging handle.

Do you know of anywhere to buy that DIP handle that'll ship to Canada? All I can find is U.S. retailers that won't ship outside of the country.

Kinney's out of the states will ship to us no problem that's where i got my extended charging handle from. Also if you find something on the DIP website you like but Kinneys doesn't carry it, email Kinneys there's a good chance they can get it for you as they didn't have the charging handle I wanted at the time but they were able to get it for me.

I’ve seen some people add j&b weld to the back of the mag to change the feed angle, might try that, last time I shot it I was using Remington golden bullet bucket of bullets bulk crap, I think I’ll try some cci I’ve got lying around next time and see how she does

Hi M,

I have a Cooey 64 with wood stock, won't sell it but you can borrow it to see how you like one before buying one.
You know where I am.

That's awesome, thanks. They have an extended mag release that I'm gonna try also. The factory one is a pain, especially for little hands.

I love my 64. Very accurate. However, after a 100ish rounds, it is super dirty in the action and always starts to jam. If I keep it clean, it runs great. For a fast action shooting style match or league night, I’d take my Ruger 10/22s. With the right ammo, like CCI, they will run all day before any malfunctions.

Take a stock 64B, install an appropriate sight and see if it will serve the purpose.
Would any alterations be for performance and function or for enhancing tackiekewlness?
