Wood or the Plastic rifle stocks

Here are some other firearms that we have, Weatherby's, Coopers and others. Most we kept, some we sold or traded. As mentioned prior, I like both kinds of gun stocks, however, favor the wood. We have many other firearms, but only showing these, for now.

When we talk to rifle manufacturers and talk about stock prices it seems that standard wooden stocks are the cheapest option. No moulds or huge production lay out required, models can change easily. vs even plastic injection moulded stocks that only get cheaper if large quantities are required vs their initial mould costs. The reason why most rifle manufacturers have their base rifles with wooden stocks. Those that manufacture in large numbers have plastic stocks in their base line. Of course wood quality can go up as high as you want.
Cold from the stock depends on the material, internal foam of some composite stocks is one of the best thermal insulators, light weight soaks away less heat. Composite stocks, at least the ones we make have their main mass (highest density) in the action area, or where fittings are. Low density materials or internals where you hold or lean your cheek against.

Roughly 900 grams carbon fibre composite.

Great points and info. Your bottom photo, I really like the look of that, and it’s weight!! Nice work :)

I don’t understand people saying that wood is not durable, I have rifles that are easy 50-60-70 years old and one well over a 100 years old and all have wood stock and none have problems! I’m sure a good quality composite stock would be more durable but how much more durable does it have to be?
That said I like the look of a nice carbon fibre stock in the stalking rifle style where the weave is left apparent under the resin/finish!
Just like this…. https://fanzoj.com/collection/single-shot-rifles/fanzoj-kb-1-ti-carbon/

Yup.
Lots of wood stocks around that went through 2 world wars and are still in use.

Wood for me:

They all get hunted with regardless of the weather. Just take care of them. Marks are inevitable if you use them and add character and memories.

At the end of the day though whatever floats your boat and works is fine.

I like both.
Synthetic for my main bolt action rifles.
Wood for lever guns and shotguns.

Maybe someone out there has a Ramline on a original Rigby Sporting Rifle?

This is why rational discussions on these topics are never possible.

You aren't irrational...nor am I. We just wear 'Different hats'. Doesn't make you wrong...nor me. But saying a piece of plastic ( carbon Fibre, same, same to me) has soul...don't be silly. Can't have soul if you were never alive... you could argue that it's dinosaur soul...go ahead.
Certain things are well presented, certain are not...but at the end of the day...it just opinions. I like wood and leather and blued Steel... my quirk. I'm guessing you like plastic, dacron and stainless...Crack on.

I was referring to the romance surrounding it. “It’s alive”! Well, no it isn’t, it’s as dead as a barn door. It’s a thing. I’m not knocking wood, but it is just wood.

Wood stocks suck! They scratch, chip, crack, swell, shrink. Sure they look great but the first time your gun slips off the side of a tree you leaned it against to take a leak. You’ll will ask yourself why the hell you decided on a wooden stock all shinny and ###y and now it has a scratch or dent in it the size of the Grand Canyon. It makes you look like a careless boob than doesn’t look after his gear and it may affect the guns useability. Tupperware stocks just make sense, your hunting firearm is a tool designed to be used to accomplish a task in what typically are the harshest of environments. Good sense says pick a durable material that isn’t affected by hot, cold, snow, rain or the occasional bump or unintended drop or fall. I’m not saying just because you have a Tupperware stock it is any less susceptible to abuse it is just a bit more forgiving to harsh conditions and overall wear and tear.

2 cents added enjoy !
Every nick, scratch an bruise add character and tell story. Plastic stocks start life with no character and spent their entire existence thusly.

Supercub, I really dig that build there!! I’d love to build a nice 7x57 some day on a ###y old Mauser some day.

I like synthetic stocks a lot but I think everyone should own at least one nice blued and walnut rifle.

They are not cheap. If you can find one already built, that's the way to go. Go for it!

Plastic or wood

It's not a mater of wood v plasitic it's a mater of your comfort level and your shooting abilities. Ask friends who have a gun like what you're looking at to see how it feels (barrel heavy, stock heavy and proper balance for ease of shooting. I have both and it doesn't matter to me either way. Being in wheelchair has changed my preferences a little bit to lighter balanced rifles.
