So... Whats so great about the FN FiveSeven? I keep hearing how great it is, and that the sell like hotcakes, but I have never been given a reason why. Also, how much is the ammo for it?

Thanks :)

They're not great at all. They've expensive by comparison, they fire a useless cartridge which no one stocks and the increased capacity is only 3-5 rounds over standard 9/40 cal pistols. Of course the capacity increase means nothing in this country.

FiveSeven is a special purpose pistol. With the right ammunition, it does exactly what it is supposed to do – namely, to penetrate kevlar armor (i.e. PASGT vests and helmets issues to U.S. troops) and still have enough energy to kill the person wearing it. 9mm and other conventional pistol ammo may be good enough for killing rag-wearing iraqis and afghans but it would not be very effective in case of a conflict with a modern, properly equipped military force. This is where the FiveSeven and similar guns are supposed to step in.

I saw some ballistics gel photos of the SS197, and that stuff looks pretty friggin' deadly.

On a slightly related note, I also saw gel shots of a 12 gauge shotgun (both w/ buckshot and a slug) and I actually felt a little ill just looking at the ballistics gel. Scary business.

Does this pistol have a polymer slide?

Does tungsten core 9mm ammunition penetrate kevlar armor? I know its been posted in this thread that 9mm does not, but just checking to see if he meant AP ammunition.

I have been told that the recoil is excellent for follow up shots, can someone verify this?

I think the idea is that a smaller diameter, higher velocity cartridge will stand a chance at punching through soft body armour, unlike most pistol rounds. If you see yourself shooting at folks wearing body armour and have a bankroll to support expensive, difficult to find ammo...knock yourself out :)

Can't say this is a common situation for me :)

I agree it's a novelty piece for the sport shooter...
I was at a match last March were one of my squad mates was shooting a P90(?) in that 5.7 cal.
'Could get hits with it nooooo problem, but... 'Couldn't knock any of the steel down.
Bullet moves fast, but hasn't enough mass to take down a popper....:D
