I realize that I live closer to New York than to Ottawa and have had thoughts for years on crossing the border to be able to get additional hunting opportunities for deer.

I know there are guides that charge and arm and a leg, but does anyone go down there to hunt state land or other public lands?

We have a lease near Watertown. Great hunting.

Not sure about public land though, likely over run.

Season is 8-10 weeks...rifle and muzzleloader.

Can get up to 4 tags as a non-res.

Hunted near Malone NY on private land for close to 19 years. I visited some public lands and can’t say they were overrun. I never ran into more than one or two groups of other hunters. What complicates hunting in the US is their requirement to have your permission to enter with a firearm pre-approved through their Form 6 . If you want to avoid the Form 6 hassle, stick with a bow or muzzleloader.

This is exactly why I was thinking about it, good hunting and multiple tags.

Probably the closest I hunted big game to upstate New York was at Covey Hill, Quebec, in 1976. I did stand near the Canada/USA border, when I found a boundry marker, while scouting the area I had permission to hunt. In 1977 I shot my first big game (whitetail) in the state of Maine, southern part of the state. Personally, I would choose Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire over New York.

Unless your looking for extra deer. Why would you bother. There are literally thousands of acres easily in your vicinity that are publicly huntable with good deer populations. If youve lived in your area for any amount of time, it shouldnt be that difficult to gain permission on some great land. Not trying to be abrasive but just curious. Just reread ur post about extra tags.

6NIA is easy to fill out. I haven't had a hard time finding a fax machine although E-filing would be much easier. Usually approved and emailed back within 2-3 weeks. I've never had any issue.

In order to bow hunt in NY you have to do a course down there or in another state, that NY accepts.

I am not sure of what area you are thinking of but gaining hunting permission around Kemptville is no longer easy. The deer numbers also crashed in the late 2000s, at this point I believe our antlerless draw gives you about a 30% chance, so no the deer numbers are not good in this area. I have permission on 1 group of farms, 1 owner, about 1200 acres, plus I have hunted public land and our own hunt camp and no the deer numbers are not good and the hunting is hard now.

It takes me 6 hours to get to my dads place in SW Ontario for a controlled hunt, it would take me 40min to get well in to New York state.

Many wmu here in the south have over 1000 antlerless tags each with near 100% success rates and several with a second available. Depending on where your dad lives I’d consider picking up a bow and taking off a week in November before the controlled, as long as it may line up in the rut. Do the states too by all means but there’s reasons thousands of Americans come to Canada to every year. As far as being 40 minutes from the border its irrelevant unless you plan on crossing every morning going out?

Yes many do, but then I would be driving 7-8 hours to stay at a hotel and try to get permission from someone down there to hunt with a bow only as I apply for the controlled hunt in 86.

I can literally drive to the middle of Pennsylvania in less time than driving to Stratford, let alone driving to the high population deer areas of SW Ontario.

I am 25min from the US border at Ogsdenburg New York, I can easily do a weekend hunt there but cannot easily do a weekend hunt in Chatham.

I was under the impression that you already had land or landowner permission as you do the shotgun hunt which is generally more difficult to gain permission. You may be well served joining an American non-resident hunter group on facebook and asking about non-res alien hunting in those north east states. The western group has near 50k members, a few NY state hunting groups etc

I have landowner permission in 86 but only my dads place and the property is almost 7 hours drive from my home. I expect that property to not be in the family within 5 years or so as well, so that gets dropped.

The permission I have is in 66A, which is Eastern Ontario and does not have very good deer numbers. I thought maybe working out permissions, a lease or public land just across the border in to US may not be a bad idea to gain some hunting opportunities, especially when the controlled hunt in SW Ontario leaves.

There are other local places I will be targeting, at least for bow only deer, but many properties are tied up here and many more are being bought up by city folks who do not want anyone hunting, ever.

The ATF Form 6 is really simple, except for having to fax it in, if they still do it that way. Hard to find a fax these days.

Agree. Form 6 is relatively easy but - if I remember correctly - you need to have a valid hunting license in order for your form 6 to be approved. But the real hassle occurs when you meet a US Customs officer who’s having a bad day. Which is why I would stick to bow and bp (Form 6 not required for those). You can get a 3-tag Super Sportsman’s license (for each season: rifle/bow/bp) plus a chance for a doe tag during the rifle season (but don’t bet on it since preference goes to land owners). NY State publishes charts showing the locations of the various public lands so it would be a snap for you to hop over the border to do some preseason scouting.

Good luck, eh.

I looked up the public forests, within 45min of my house there are 3 and a total of over 15,000 acres of public land :O

So when you but those extra privileges, you could shoot all 3 during the bow season, 2 of those during the ML season and only the 1 with a rifle, at least that is how it read to me.

NY non residents licences...

Non resident hunting licence which includes deer and bear, gives you a buck tag. $100

Muzzle loader permit used during the ML seasons only, gives you an either ### tag. $30.

You can apply for 2 doe management permits (DMP) for specific zones...one per zone. $10 for both.

The regular buck tag and the DMP can be used anytime including during a ML season, but you have to have the ML permit to hunt the ML seasons.

Where I hunt, it is a fair distance from the next zone, so basically I get 3 tags.

Realistically, you could shoot a buck and 2 does in one day during the ML season or a buck and doe during the regular season and still have an either ### tag for ML seasons.

You need to complete a bowhunting course to bow hunt in NY.

I read that part but could not quite understand how the tags actually worked.

Thanks
