Any arguments against the Ruger American?

The 5.5lb 450 BM has some appeal, other than that the Mossberg Patriot seems like a nicer rifle.

Call me old fashined though, but I'll take a used Husqvarna in today's market.

Aren't too many good deals left on the market but they are one

I'd ask if you can't afford nicer guns but then I see the Swaro on it up top ;) Kiddin!

That one is a shooter. Never tried that model. Think I am going to very soon though.

How do you like the Sig scope? That ones a Whiskey3? Likely be a Vx-Freedom 2-7x33 here.

Good hunting!

Yeah the Swaro and the DNZ mount (if bought at MSRP) comes out to about 2x the price i paid for the rifle back in 2018. All to save a whopping 4.6 oz over the Sig/Burris Zee/Factory rail setup lol.

That particular Sig was a fine scope especially for the $. Pretty sure the new Primary Arms Hunter line is made in the same factory. Clarity and light gathering is very good. Probably on par with the Leupold Freedom line. That said, glass is somewhat objective to the person behind it. I will admit to being a bit of an optics snob, but not based strictly on how much you pay, more in the value for the $. Hell I had that Sig on my budget rimfire PRS rifle for 1 match just for giggles. Switched over to a Bushnell only because i wanted more magnification and a finer cross hair for those 100m shots

Awesome lol

As subjective as glass is, your rating it that high really makes me wonder if i don't just want to do the Whisky3 in 2-7x33 and not spend a few hundred bucks to save 3 oz of weight lol

To me there is way more to a rifle than its ability to shoot tiny groups off the bench! It needs to look good and to be well made with some nice fit and finish, it need too feel good in the hands and shoulder well! So far for me non of the synthetic stocks give me that!
None of the cheaper rifles give me what I’m looking in for a rifle. I’m a fan of the Ruger no1 for look and craftsmanship, but they don’t fit me as well as other rifles so I sold them all (4)! There is lots of great rifle for less than 1k on the EE that will shoot as good as any and have better craftsmanship than the savage axis and Ruger American of this world!! But again to each there own! If the only thing that matter to you is cost and groups then the proof is in the pudding, looks like those price conscious rifles shoot well enough and even better than the most expensive rifle out there!

Whats it like shooting that thing? Especially without the brake?

The wee beasty has some snap to 'er with my hardcast load using 360 gr bombs at 1500 fps from a rest, but it be easy on the shoulder fer me at least after 50 shots. I yanked the cannon brake off the bugger as soon as I got it. Not a fan of brakes meself.

I understand :) That one must really have some boom to it. Was wondering what a 5.5lb unbraked RAR was like when its shooting a chunk of lead that big! Sounds like pretty much a 45/70 trapdoor load

Interesting how much lighter they go with a bigger hole down the tube. Here's my 6.5 Grendel RAR specs when I originally got it, listed as 6.1 lbs, it came at 6 lb 3.0 which is 6.187 lbs.

6 lb 3.0 oz bare rifle with magazine.
Stock is 1 lb 9 oz
Barrelled action with action screws and factory 6" scope rail = 4 lb 6.5 oz
Magazine 3.0 oz

The bolt is 11.5 oz, action screws are 0.5 oz, the factory rail is 2 to 2.5 oz from recollection as I pulled mine in place of talley lightweight rings.

The weight is in right place, in the metal, it's a stout little barrel and action and it has a great feel out of the box imo.

How does it feed flat nose bullets?

One thing to be said for the ruger; it's a light gun

Large meplat boolits don't feed worth a poop, as the actions and mags on the Ruger Americans are designed to function with spire point and/or
truncated cone type projectiles. No worries fer me though, as I use all my centerfire rifles as single shots whether huntin' or plinkin'.

There is beauty in being an accurate inexpensive reliable rifle rattling around in the cab of a pick up or tractor its there when you need it where your ruger number 1 will be home safe in the safe.

I picked up my Ruger American Hunter for $1000 new. Magpul stock, AICS mags, heavy barrel, RPR brake. I think it was one hell of a deal for what you get. The bolt started out with the token "zipper" sound but now that it's had a couple hundreds rounds through it, its become one of my smoothest actions, Winchesters and CZ included.
