Wet M1 Garands 1942

Gentlemen,
This file is for the new guys that have just found my sites. This file deals with what I would call a MAJOR PROBLEM. It seems that the M1 Garand Rifle fails and jams when in a rain storm. If you follow these files they will tell you about it. We have been at WAR as of Dec. 1941. I hope you find this data of interest.

Without input from you guys no one learns anything Try to put in some info/question and we can learn more of the M1's History. Your input is very important to all of us.

ps Guys remember this data is to keep the M1 Garand alive by its HISTORY. The more history you know the better you can shop for your next one.

This is a interesting file,....i am curious if problem with the M1 rifle in wet conditions didn't show up in the Phillipines where General Macarthurs troops were issued with the M1 rifle....that is a very tropical climate...lots of heavy rain....but as all the troops where POW's by this time..the reports of the M1 probably never reached the infantry school at Fort Benning.

The Phillipines..correct me if i am wrong was where the M1 rifle first saw combat....though i have never seen pictures of the troopies with these rifles...just the 03 Springfield and the Model 1917 Enfield issued to Filipino troops...

If one watches close ...you can seen a M1 firing at Jap planes at the attack on Midway Island...this was in May 1942....next use was with the US Rangers when they landed attached to British commandos at Dieppe ..August 1942

Dieppe was a clusterf**k commanded by the Brits and used Mostly Canadian troops as cannonfodder for the test of the D-Day invasion. Mostly British and Canadian ships under British command as well.

Thats an intersting file as i have restored a 1942 Garand to its original configuration. It would have been affected by that kind of situation.
I'm not going to fire it in the rain to find out if i can duplicate it though.

The Canadian 2nd Infantry Division ..approx 5000 troops ,..along with 1000 Brtish Commandos and 50 U.S. Rangers attached to the Brits to get actual combat experiance....if one looks closely at photo's of the Rangers after the raid..you can see the M1' rifle and the bandoliers of 8rd clips around the ranger shoulders.

There is stiil alot of controversy over the Dieppe raid....the Candian troops were getting bored from training in the UK...the Canadian general commanding heard about the raid been planned for Dieppe and put pressure on the British Chiefs of Staff to include Canadian troops.....

Too right they were bored, my Grandfather remustered to RCAF aircrew training in an attempt to have a go at the Hun! Cost him his life sadly!

Roger Ford, in his book The World's Great Rifles, has an excellent picture of Merrill’s Marauders breaking down their garands for intensive cleaning in the field, specifically because of the nature of the Garand.

Still, what a sweet rifle...

Gee, I was stationed in germany and we broke down our M1's to clean them as well. Hardly a tropical climate.

So hard it washed the oil ouf of the stock
Felt like I was getting sand blasted
Eyes squinting - Saw a deer
Racked a round
Pulled the trigger
"Click"
nothing
pulled the case
Firing pin did not touch the primer (small dent)
Tried again
Same thing
Third time the deer was gone but the rifle worked
