Hey guys

I am going to be buying a Mini in either .223 or 7.62 x 39

Its going to be a tricked out camp gun / plinker / zombie neutralizer

Which round should I go for ?
From what I hear the .223 is better for long range over the other do to the 7.62 losing enertia faster.

thanks for your input ... please no bashing get a m14 stuff. :D
And yes I watched alot of A team growing up :rolleyes:
 
I already have a 30 - 06 for them tasty deer :)

I was leaning towards the .223 but there is so much cheap '39 ammo out there ... true its dirty but i like cleaning my gun :)
 
Get the new mini 14 target in the hogue overmolded stock. Supposed to shoot better than MOA. Dude in the local gunstore (also a member here I believe) says one of their customers has achieved as small as a 3/8" group at 100yds.:eek:

I read about a guy who shot 3/4 group with hornady's i think... they are a cool little plinker with lots of mods... but considering what ppl are saying I may get a M14s and just chop it..
 
Well after much consideration and reading...

Im gonna order a M-14 S from marstar :D
the mini isnt quite what I was wanting... its handy and light but still too Mr.T
for me :rolleyes:
 
I have a Mini 30, I love it. some place's don't allow .223's for deer hunting,
My mini 30 has good range, also I'm trying out a new handload. .305 110gr. round nose bullets. should be a great bush bucker like the .30 cal carbine.
I would like to find some 135gr. or 140 gr. round nose bullets in .305, anyone???
Remember the Ruger Mini 30 has a .305 bore, not a .311 !

That would be .308 bore not 305 :D
Those 110gn round nose are very soft, I wouldn't expect much penetration!
I'd look for some heavier 135-140 PSP.
If to long in the point simply file a little of the tip off, won't hurt accuracy.

Wrongo, I slugged my bore .305, also the bullets messure .305. not.308
7.62MM=.305
But the point was a pointed nose bullet has a higher rate of deflection than a round or flat nose bullet. Filling them would be very inacurate to say the least. I did find some 110gr bullets that have lead only at the exteme tip of the bullet.
Imperial used to sell .303 135 gr. kling kore round nose bullets, but again they were .311
 
I don't know what the bore size is, but I really doubt taking the lead tip off a spitzer will alter the accuracy unless your measuing with a 10 thou micrometer. I've shot lots of spitzers at the range that have had there tips mashed from recoil in the mag and haven't noticed any change in group size and I'm talking under moa rifles, so I think if you did want to shorten them a bit your mini accuracy won't suffer.
I also remember reading an article in handloader or rifle that said the lead tip burns off before it's even out of the barell, can't remember if it was a general statement or on a specific cal.

Well there is something wrong with your rifle, your bullets, or your calipers....:confused:
7.62x39 made anywhere but the US use a .311 bore/projectile, in the US it's generally a .308.......
Are you measuring the lands and not the grooves?

Your right about euro 7.62x39 ammo being .311. but take a digital caliper or micrometer and messure a .30 cal bullet. or a military 7.62 x51 bullet, you will get 7.62mm or .305, the same applies to Remington or American eagle

I'm a gunsmith & balistic tester. I've done it many times, I even taught it in the military as a weapons tec.

Also the 7.5x55 Shmit-Rubin rifle made around 1923 has a .305 bullet also.
it actuly almost replacates the Ackley .284-.30 wildcat.
Great cartridge by the way.

I just measured a NA 7.62x39 & got 3.07 ahead of the cannuler.
That's the only way you'll get smaller than .308 bullet! It will measure .308 below the cannuler.
& I also just measured a euro & got 3.10 ahead if cannuler & 3.11 below!

Are you sure your Mic & dial indicator is zero'd correctly!


& NO filing the point of a bullet has little or NO effect on accuracy, it's the base that's important.

& it's also been pretty much proven that PSP has no better or worse deflection problems than a RN bullet.
