Killing a Big Deer

um........ so was I

( I think that was a reference to me, i'm neither young nor did I hold a rank above gunner, so no thank you)

No gunner I do not believe that looch nor myself were aiming at you.........but you have to admit he did a marvelous job with his dry wit.
I thought so , I very nearly drove my fingers through the keyboard.

Check out Ontario Trophy Bucks Forum. Lots of useful info on there. My opinion is that you have the wrong idea about hunting( killing). Seems to me, alot of new hunters think like you. Also seems to me that your outfitter wasn't very good unless you were looking for a world record buck.

Stumble around the woods blindly. You'll eventually find one.

Better yet. Learn to shoot the does and spikes. Killing a few of those cleanly will help ensure that you don't blow it when the big one finally comes out.

LOOCH...do you post under TWO names !:D

First deer and you want a giant rack. LOL how will you beat that each year? You said you havent even seen a deer while hunting yet and your going for a monster?

Find a area with ton of deer like WMU 80 81b and do some scouting. Play the wind right and do yourself a favour and shoot the first thing that comes out.

I got a few big racks in the basement that you can tape onto a head of any deer you shoot if thats what it takes to make you feel like a better hunter? I did that to a friend to show him how easy it was to kill a big rack, the hardest part in hunting a big rack is to find one.

This is me with my first big buck after 9 years of hunting. The first 4 years I never saw a single deer, lots of sign but no deer. I have shot other does and spikers but it took until last season to get this guy (shot a doe 30 seconds before him).

The point is do not be in a hurry. Deer hunting is hard work. I recommend like others that you find a group of guys in an established camp to hunt with. You will learn lots from them but also try to form your own opinions as well. The last 4 years I have hunted with a great bunch of guys with varying experience and have learned lots. The excitement for me has been in the learnign and just being outside. I have seen way more deer than I have shot or shot at . In the long run I think you will get more out of the experience by being patient than just gunning for a trophy.

If a trophy is all you want then book guided hunt out west (which is your best bet). However, you will get a lot more out of it if you have to spend the time and energy yourself.

Actually shot at a doe 30 seconds before this guy came out. Shot at her twice at about 50 yards missing the first shot but on the second shot she crested a hill and I couldn't see her so I sat tight but sure I had hit her. Next thing you know this guy comes out 30 feet away from me :D. After a shot right through his heart he only went 20 feet and dropped dead. As I walked up to him I could see over the crest the doe had crossed and she was laying there. I had broken her spine and her back legs didn't work. Had to shoot her again.

I hunt with many people throughout the season. The camp i hunt week two with has may older hunters in the group.

tons of deer have been taken by these hunter but not all of them have killed deer worthy of head mounting.

If it is a trophy you are looking for it may take years to find

Your comment about needing to kill a big deer reminds me about my comment to my Grand Master when I started Taekwon Do. He asked me why I started this martial art. I responded by saying it would be neat to become a blackbelt. He replied "Here you go" and handed me one. "Now you're a blackbelt" Of course I felt silly.

What I have found in my several year journey in martial arts, is what I have found about hunting. I learned more about ME. My skills, smarts ( and stupids!!) and outsmarting my "oponent".

Its not just the reward, although you may show it proudly, its the journey. And, for me, I return frequently with an unfilled tag, but feeling very rewarded indeed.

Here endeth the sappy story;)
