Favorite 100 yd black bear

9.5x57 in an old mannlicher for me. 220gr Hornady’s work great, trying out 260gr partitions this year. Past 100 yards the iron sights start to cover up to much of the target, I prefer 75 yards or closer.

A few with mono metal bullets under 100 yards. Is there a cartridge that won’t work in this application? How about you start posting pictures Spritzer.

All spot and stock. So they could have been well over 100 yards. A consideration when you’ve hamstrung yourself with a 100 yard cartridge.

Only ever shot one bear, 6.5 creed loaded with a 143gr eld-x bullet over h4350. Shot him at 109 yards, went about 20 yards before he expired. Have had good luck with those bullets on deer too. Very accurate as wellIMG_4153.jpg

I have a few that i use past 100. The 8x57, 7x64, 7x57, 30-06, 308. Depends what i'm feeling that day and season.

Last week i filled a tag with the 1912 mauser. Shot was around 100 yards. With irons. One shot with 173gr SPCE S&B. The Old 7x57 still working and doing the job.

I really like the 338 fed only thing is use soft expanding boolits. .too slow for the mono's in my opinion
show us some black bear pics

I've shot a pile of deer and elk with the 210 TSX. Definitely not too slow for mono. Maybe if you were planning to shoot long range it would be but I don't think that's really the 338 Federal's best usage.

I have shot the vast majority of my Black Bears with the 30-06 and either 165 or 180 Partitions.
However, the 7x57, the 303 British, the 6.5x55, the 8x57, the 308 Norma Mag, and the 300 Savage
have all worked well also. Dave.

Looks like all types of ammo work inside 100 yards .
Has anyone had any failures that can be put on the bullet , or cartridge

Often depends on the construction of the mono too...several are not made for only high speeds but for a specific cartridge...

That sounds like a cool combo. Happy it works

Yup a 30-30 with 150-170 grain bullet is quite capable.
Remembering my grandfathers 1940-1950 Outdoor Life magazines where Winchester advertised the 30-30 as the ideal deer rifle and the 32 Special as being the choice for deer and black bear.
That’s some pretty creative advertising right there.
