It's a pre-64 Win Model 88 in .308. The wood and metal are excellent with no visible imperfections - a good 95%. The rifling is as new and it functions flawlessly.

It would be a desirable collectible save and except someone has replaced the original sling swivels with studs and installed a recoil pad. (unknown if stock has been shortened)

The owner wants $2500 for it. I'm thinking it might be worth something close to that if it hadn't been messed with but no where near that as it is.

What's it worth as described?

I should've made it clear that I'm not interested in purchasing it. I think its way over priced. I'm posting it for discussion and to see what others think.

As someone who’s hunted with an 88 and worked on a couple they are not $1000 rifles let alone $2500 rifles. If it were a first year in .243, mint condition, unfired with the original box $1800 at the max. I love the old girls but they were/are just not that scarce and/or valuable, I wouldn’t pay that for a savage 99 either.

It's not a "Desirable Collectible" with those described mods and 'fired' condition. . . unlessyou're the collector and it's worth it to you. I'd go for $1k or less. . . and I'm a sucker for a pretty face

When 88's were still being made they were no big deal... but there seems to be a cult following who think they are worth a lot. Think about it... no parts have been available for many, many years...

Give me a bolt action please.

I have a pre 64 in mint condition and would not sell for a nickel under 1500.. is 2500 maybe high ? ya a bit , but if the wood is nice and blue'n

They will be worth that in time

For $2500 I might have to think about selling my pre .308, and tossing in the post .243 for good measure.
As has been said, the .308 is the most common at around $7-800 and any auction usually has a few .308's.

you absolutely right , except most at 800 are junk rifles . 2500 is too much though

I will buy any win 88 in 243 or 358 for 900 , in decent shape
Stuff is referring to a 308, I think. The gun inquestion is in 308, buttstock cut and swivels added. $750 tops and it doesn't matter how much blue is on it. It's a hunter absolutely NO collector value and I've been in the winchester game for 40 years.
