What is your favourite 22lr for plinking?

I do lots of informal 3 position target shooting and my favourite rifle for that is a CIL-Anschutz 190 with the good target aperture sights. For general plinking my favourite is a Mossberg 151M, also with aperture sights.

GSG-16 is a lot of fun, even though it is pretty plasticky. I like the factory trigger much better than my 10/22's heavy trigger.

For overall fun, surprisingly my go to is the CZ 457. Mine is the Canadian version (I just love the colour and the maple leaf texturing). It's my first CZ and it has been nothing but impressive, from build quality to performance. The bolt throw is smooth like butter.

I have shot a friend's H0001 and it's a lovely gun and I would definitely get one of my own if I can find one used at a decent price. The speed loader is definitely a plus and an asset to have when using it.

For plinking semi-auto: the Citadel Trakr with a 3x red dot, Winchester Wildcat with a Simmons 3-9x50mm scope and the Ruger 10/22 stainless Manlicher with a 3-9x42mm scope.

For plinking bolt: the Citadel Trakr with a Weaver 3-9x40mm scope and the Ruger 77/22 stainless Manlicher with a Simmons 3x9x32mm scope.

I’m looking at adding a 22LR to my collection and there are so many options it’s overwhelming. The ones im looking at so far:

• Semi-auto - GSG-16 9”
I like the GSG option in a shorter barrel since it looks tactical and has 22 round mags which look fun to practice reloads. Also, this model has a buffer tube which allows for Magpul stocks to be attached. I read that the GSG 16s may have reliability issues with FTF or bolt issues after a number of rounds.

• Bolt-action - CZ 457 American
My first choice for a bolt action because I want something with a classic premium wood look and something accurate.

• Pump-action - Henry Pump Action Octagon
I don’t know too much about this one but it looks very fun to shoot.

• Lever-action - Henry H001 Lever action
Apparently this lever action is so smooth and lever action looks super fun to shoot.

Any suggestions?

As much as I enjoy shooting my 14lb custom CZ457, I recently have been enjoying shooting my other CZ457. It was originally the synthetic model but upgraded the stock with an American stock and replaced the pencil barrel with my 16" MTR match barrel.

I like plinking reactive targets with iron sights or red dots , shooting off hand using rifles that feel good regardless of the action type... for handguns my favourites are .22lr revolvers as the reloads slow things down a bit and makes it easy to collect the empties.

Looks like a good list, I am sure you would be happy with any of them. Here is my personal rimfire roundup. I have had a staggering amount of .22s over the last 20 years but these are my keepers.

Marlin 39m
Remington 572
CZ452 Varmint
A pair of 10/22’s a stainless and a compact.

Not really sure if I could pick a favorite but the 572 is close.

CZ 457 American, comes with a 24.8" barrel. Feels like a real rifle, and is as accurate as I could ever need. Super quiet with subsonic ammunition, no need for ear protection.

Depends on the day really. Generally speaking all my rifles are for plinking as I’m not a hunter and only just started shooting orps the season.

I couldn’t choose one I enjoy them all for different reasonings. I have an heirloom piece passed down 2 generations (Browning SA22). A weatherproof takedown I can pack away and head to range via motorcycle (Ruger/Magpull pack packer stainless), I have the handy light bolt gun (CZ 457 Canadian). The ACCURATE semi (upgraded Savage A22F in Boyd’s At-One) , and a Heavy’ish VERY ACCURATE Bolt gun (production class setup Savage B22FV SS). And lastly I have a just fun to shoot lever gun that’s sole purpose is to own a lever gun and enjoy it (Henry Frontier in 22wmr)

Depending on my mood or what I feeling is which ones my favourite on any given day.

I tend to get bored easily shooting 22. But it may have just been the guns I was using. Reloading the win. low wall after each shot was tedious. Now with the savage 64 TR-SR with a couple extended mags I can fling lead as fast as I want at the targets and enjoy myself much more. Although I'm going through considerably more ammo.

^wow, that looks excellent. Wasn't expecting any surprises in this thread, she's a beauty!

OP-don't sweat it too much, chances are you'll end-up with a bunch of 22s (together, or over time). My only suggestion would be to get something good quality to start. I've seen it happen-someone gets a 22 late in life/as an experienced shooter only to pick a gimmicky gun and then wonder why the accuracy isn't there, it's a pain to take apart/clean, etc. I've known guns like that to last one outing before being sold.

I'd personally suggest a Tikka T1x MTR 20" as an excellent place to start, but the CZ457 is a fine choice too. (and lots of configurations) I don't think semis are a great first gun, rimfire or centerfire. That's me though.

The only 22 I've ever owned and thought; "I think more R&D was required before they released this thing" was a Henry pump.

Any one of a number of my tube-fed semis. So easy to load, so easy to unload. :) The Mossberg 151M probably has the best trigger of the lot, the Winchester 77 maybe next.

Savage FVSR: 16 ounce trigger, polished bolt, glass bedded, DIP bottom metal, Riton 6-24
Marlin 795: 2 pound trigger, glass bedded. DIP alluminum trigger guard, 1-6 LPVO
