Hi,
As the title states, I am looking for load data to load some 300 gr. TSX for my 45-70. I will buy the Barnes
No.4 manual off anyone that would be willing to sell it. Failing that could someone kindly send me a photo of that particular page in the manuel. I will be using either IMR 4198 or Rel #7.
I could try guessing at a starting load, based on cup and core bullets, but I would rather be safe than sorry, because I realize that monolithic bullets build more pressure than traditional cup and core bullets.
Thanks, in advance to anyone that might be able to help me out.

The Hodgdon 2019 Annual reloading manual doesn’t specify list your bullet of choice, however it does list two 300 grain bullets of similar weight.
The two powders are IMR 4198 & H4198. Here goes:
300 grain Barnes TTSX 50.0 grains of IMR 4198 @ 2207 fps. 53.0 @ 2323 fps
300 grain SIE HP 54.0 grains of IMR 4198 @ 2253 fps…..58.5 grains @ 2450 fps.

Pretty stout loads! Hitting 2000 fps is beyond awesome for 45-70 but watch out for recoil.

45-70

Barnes manual #4, unfortunately there’s no one powder shared between the two bullets for comparison.

I have some Barnes factory ammo with that bullet that I chronographed. If I remember correctly it was the same as my muzzle loader with 45cal 300gr XTP, which is around 1850 fps. I don’t have it written down in my book though so can’t verify. Recoil in my 1895 is not excessive with that ammunition.

Thank you, very much for the load data, and the information on the factory loads. I have a box of factory 300 grain TSX that shoot very well in my Marlins. Knowing their velocity will be of great help developing a load, now that I have a chronograph.
Again, thank you.

Are you sure those are 45-70 Marlin loads. Not knowing better I would say those are loads meant for a Ruger #1, or possibly a 458.
