Big Game hunting in Grizzly country

Lots of crickets here since a Mountain Grizzly attacked a woman going about her work. Bear "bluff" charged and pursued her after she retreated. So really the "bluff" charge wasn't a bluff at all.

bluff charge is interesting i wasnt there but a friend of us got bluff charged 2 times by a sow and 2 cubs bigger than her and she came back alone with her eyes targetted on him. he shot with his 30-06 one shot and that was it. he used the dlp process and got the skin and the skull back. myself have been charged two 2 times by grizzly and they broke the charge so it was bluff but you never know up it is happening and the experts can tell a lot about it but when you are on your own that is your call ...

Years ago when I hunted the Peace River region and we knew bears were around it was a thing that one guy would gut and skin while the 2nd stood watch with his rifle. We would change off after a time periodically to give the skinner a break. This was to maintain situational awareness and avoid being so engrossed in your task that you fail to notice a visitor creeping up on your kill.

Do folks still do this??

Depending on where I/we are we will do this.

A stressed/defensive bear can bluff charge, if it’s stressed enough it can decide to attack and the bluff turns into something more dangerous. If it gets within a certain range depending on what deterants you have you shoot it or spray it when it crosses that line, shame this woman didn’t have a better plan or deterant.

It surely caught your attention that several young Female tree planters have been attacked, and in the case near Swan Hills killed. Interestingly, not so many young Male tree planters. There was a Female tree planter attacked years ago near Ft Nelly while a landing helo was right there, and even that didnt scare the bear off.

Change of topic ….

I am really worried about driving on the highway these days …. and getting into an accident ... and as a result … biting the grass.

I mean we are far more likely to die as a result of a car accident than a bear attack … right?

So, how do I reinforce my truck? Should I install heavy duty bumpers …. or maybe a roll over cage? Or maybe bullet proof my windows would be enough? Or maybe I need additional airbags …. ?

How do I best step it up?

I wouldn't rule out Moon Cycle stuff, bears have keen senses. Bears are no doubt aware, but whether it is a trigger is another question. I ran into a woman tree planter from Kebec a few years ago, she smelt like a sewer from 10 feet away.

I also wouldn't rule out that it is actually female on female aggression. And women tend to be smaller than men by something like 10-20%, size is a deterrent. Men also have faster reactions, deeper voices and the intangibles of 100,000 years of dealing with predators.

Having said that, none of these things seem to be involved in this bear attack other than the bear, for whatever reason, picked the tent of women, I would be interested if any of the toiletries mentioned contained castoreum.

Nice, I value your opinion at zero.

I am glad we are on the same page .... ;)

But my question was a serious question .... if we are talking about how to "step it up" in bear country .... I would like to hear how people "step it up" on the road ... and how they reinforce their cars and trucks .....

You should spend a pile of time thinking and talking about what you will do, just before an accident... Then if you ever start to see an accident unfolding in front of you... like say at 100 yards or so... don't do a damn thing!!! It could just be a bluff accident. You have to wait until the accident is 10 yards or less away from you before you react. Then you certainly will have enough time to decide if its a bluff accident, or a real accident. Only then, can you react... never sooner. This always applies when you're going 50 kph. If slower, maybe the distance changes?

You need a Tac-14 with #4 Buck in Bat Country.

So do you step it up a bit with cartridge , while hunting in heavy Grizz country
I had to be careful of wording for you BC folks
Bears everywhere ..BUT
do you take into consideration your location and the rifle/ bullet / cartridge of choice
OR
Most of the times I’ve taken a sideways step and am carrying a recurve. If I have an animal down I will walk to the truck if possible and grab a rifle. Live and hunt the areas around 7-15, lots of grizzly and lots of people without any firearms. Going off the Prince George hiking group of Facebook there are dozens of soccer moms hitting the alpine in heavy, heavy grizzly country every weekend. People that don’t live or infrequently visit these areas at times seem to be hyper paranoid, never mind step it up, shoot what your good with, the best weapon of all is between your ears anyways

All I had on me was a 46# recurve the day I bumped into him a few km from where we were calling elk, a friend had a 300wsm

I loled, this is so true.

You mean the granola girls and retirees in Canmore aren't packing defender 12 gauges?

Between this comment, the truck comparison and our statistical analysis of CGN bear deaths this may be our best bear thread ever

just asking
bear spray perhaps ? for some of the soccer moms
does living in their space mean something to them , like , he's a resident , don't touch
does being brave make you safe , or just between the ears
some think a life jacket is a joke , I don't need one
some make remarks from a province , no grizz , but lots of hiway and some drivers that need magnum trucks

Look at the size of that thing... bigger than a house...
