What is the best original Mauser, variant or copy?

Hi

1930's production Obendorf commercial Mauser with high grade wood. Absolutely beautiful rifles without being "to much". They operate and shoot as good as they look, unless the barrel has been shot out of them.

Chambered in your choice of calibers, like say 30-06 ....:D

Why do they have two cross bolts,as opossed to all other mausers one?

Bob

Hi

One of the most common stock failures is at the "wrist". I suspect they had a theory that the second cross bolt would reenforce the stock in this area. I can't see how that would be the case, but it's the only explanation I can see.

The lug at the wrist not only acted as a reinforcing lug but also as a sling mount. Personally I don't like it. It dosen't feel very good to get that sucker in the lips - thank you recoil (ouch). I learned my lesson.

I think that the FN purpose built israeli 98k in 7.62. They built .22 single shot 98k training rifle, 98k issue rifle and 98k sniper rifle with 4x scope and heavy european spring mount. These guns were built after the M1 garand,M1 carbine, sks and AK47 rifles were in everyday use.

My vote goes to my BRNO K98 Mauser. Great quality steel, nice laminated beech stock and excellent workmanship. Also, I like the large trigger guard for use with gloves in the fall.

The Swede M38 is sweeter to shoot though with it's mild recoil, high accuracy, and longer better fitting stock. I'm just not fond of the long lock time on them, but it probably made them very reliable in winter use.

I have to agree with Riflechair on the Persian Mauser.BRNO made some very sweet shooting Mausers and topped up with that, 15 inch sword bayonet, it was respectical amount of military might. It's too bad they are ,as scarce ,as hens teeth.Every Milsurp collection should have one.

1908 Brazilian

I'm gonna have to go with the early model 1908 Brazilian in 7x57. I have shot 1891 Argentine, German K98 from 41 and 43 as well as a mint Porto M41 contract rifle, M96/41 sniper, 1904/39 Portuguese, 1895 Chilean. The 1908 is relatively light, slender, points well, smooth action and beautifully made. The rifle is stupid accurate with factory ammo. Shot 40 rounds of Federal power shock.

Claven2 - right on! I have both a 1908 and a 1909. When I acquired the 1908, it had fired three shots at the German factory in the early 1900's. Gorgeous rifle. I also have a 98 Norwegian 30-06 with some Nazi markings still on it. That, too, is a nice rifle. He!!, I like 'em all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:p:p

Best Original Mauser

The best original Mausers I think are:
1908 Brazilian
1935 Brazilian
1912 Steyr with Tiger Stripe Stock
1909 Peruvian with Tiger Stripe Stock
FN K98's for Israel

Most of the German Model 98 Mausers of WWI are rough compared to pre war contract models. Most that I have run across came through Turkey.

I'm just wondering if any body had any experience with the 1948BO models made in Yugoslavia. This seems to be a very nice looking rifle. From what I can gather , all the parts were milled on these and not stamped. Any info appreciated. THKX Bob

from what i have seen, i wouldn't rate the yugo M48 as well as a pre WWII or early war german rifle. they are no wheres near the old contract mausers made for the south american countries. or the swedish mausers for that matter.
