Black powder coyotes?

Has anybody tried hunting predators like coyotes with black powder?
I live 30 km east of Sherwood Park in the black powder/shotgun only zone where there are about a million of these 'yotes! Since I live just inside the Strathcona county boundary, I'm going to give it a try. Any advice from the more experianced?:sniper:

Good set up in a blind will be a great help.

Make sure you can get your rifle accurate at 100 yards and inside.
If you are near housing or acreages, maybe a cal that sounds like a lost cat or house dog?:D
No kidding, they are there for a reson, and pets are an easy source of food....

Hi Armoured trooper. The woes of Strathcona County are known to me as well (I am not far from Ardrossan). You must be really careful if shooting in the county. Their regulations are fairly strict for shooting. Permission, distance from property, land size and other rules have made me forget about shooting within county lines, I found it's just not worth it. I shoot between Tofield and Ryley areas on a farmers property I have permission to hunt on (coyote and mule deer heaven). This fall I will apply for BP deer tag around the Staging Area (must be near you). A good example of why is last summer a few kids (with adults) were shooting gophers with pellet guns on a 80 acre field across the road from where I live. I saw nothing wrong in what they were doing, but shortly after they got hunting, 6 RCMP cars were there, and basically put a stop to their day. This property is owned by an older gent who allows people on his hay field. But I assume the police got a phone call about someone with a gun and of course they spring into action. I hear many complaints from neighbors about the coyote problem but Strathcona bylaws have made it so preditor control is pretty much non existant. Check the county website and call their office for current regulations. Last thing you need is every cop in the county coming up to you with a gun drawn. If you need a place to target shoot join the Sherwood Park F & G association, that is what I did. A full family membership is $110.00 this year. Good luck, let me know how you make out.
 
M77 is right. Strathcona County is known to be permission friendly. Head it further east to Tofield, or north. It sucked 12 years ago when I tried to gain access for bowhunting, and it will suck even more now that the urban sprawl has crept even further into the county.

Maybe if enough coyotes start to take free dinners at calving time, or if little Suzies pet poodle gets ripped to shreds, or god forbid, little Suzie herself then the county will take notice. I have personally seen coyotes in my area run in packs ranging from 4 to 12 animals and they don't wait for dark either. Many dogs around here have been tempted out by a coyote bi_ch in heat, then attacked by the pack. Of course this is something we never read in the Sherwood Park newspaper. Just my 2c on the matter.
 
Last Month we had a very wierd incident I live south of the Blackfoot staging area and a bit south east of Hastings Lake about a half mile inside the strathcona boundary.
I found a dead whitetail 10 meters from our front door step on the edge of our driveway. It appears that coyotes had run it down and it slipped on the edge of the driveway giving the 'yotes time to jump on it. When I came on the scene, the yotes had disappeared into the heavy bush around our home, but the body cavety was open and steaming so the animal must have been killed recently. I went into the house to call my better half and about five minutes later, I looked out the window and saw three coyotes back at the carcass feeding with two others in the woodline next to our horse trailer about 20 meters away! I grabbed My stepson's camara and took a video of this happening about a minute and 30 seconds in all! I called the fish and wildlife boys who came over and placed what was left of the deer into the back of their pickup. The officer agreed with me the only way that buck was caught was due to slipping on the hard packed surface of the driveway. After showing this video to the neighbors, I have lots of people who want coyotes dead and are allowing me to hunt on their property.
 
I wish I could see the video. Could prove educational to Sherwood Park city council. Any chance you can download it to your computer and e-mail me a copy? Did you get the names of the F & W officers who attended?

If you look up the regulations I think you'll find that the "blackpowder/shotgun only" regulations are only for big game hunting. Coyotes are not controlled under the Fish & Wildlife Act or Regulations and as such, the shooting regs don't apply.

A remote controled call would help. The coyote would be looking at the source of the call,

Last time I looked, electronic calls are not allowed in Alberta.

I didn't get that officer's name either but I think he is out of vegriville and it wouldn't be hard to get his name. My stepson attempted to download the video onto the computor from his camera, but it wouldn't work. I'll see about taking it to the photo section in Sherwood parks' wall mart to get that video and pics downloaded onto a DVD
 
I don't have the ability to post pics on this site and I think dial up would make things difficult as well. My stepson was able to download the videos of the coyotes on the deer carcasse last night. We are still very amazed at the sight of these predators feeding on a deer so close to home.
