I just got into the CRPS(Canadian Rimfire Precision Series) world.
With the $500 USD limit on the firearm, would the Ruger Precision Rimfire be a solid choice? Or is there any other better choices?

Only the PRS Organization truly follows that Dollar Value for their Production Class. CRPS and ORPS have a detailed list and what’s not on that list can be emailed in to Rick the organizer for clarification on classification.
I’m using a CZ 457 ProVarmint in Production Class which retails for 699 USD and 1000CAD. Well above the 500 minimum. PRS has a rifle optic combo value CAP at 1500 USD MRSP which is followed religiously.

Best Contenders for Production Class CRPS/ORPS* are:

CZ 457 Varmint
CZ 457 ProVarmint
Tikka T1x
Savage Mark 2 & B22
Lithgow LA101

Honestly, I'd be looking in to a CZ variant. Varmint or Pro Varmint would be good options. Go to www.rimfireprecision.ca and you can find a list of approved equipment.
The big reason for the CZ is the aftermarket support for when you go Open class. There are a few aftermarket triggers, or just trigger springs, chassis or stocks, easy replacement barrels, etc, available.

Right now, I am running a CZ 457 Varmint, but wish I got the Pro Varmint. As long as it doesn't have the match chamber, it's pretty much good to go.
I ended up with a 20 MOA rail from MDT. With my scope, I should be able to go with the 50 MOA and still get a 50 yard zero. This is with the Cabelas Covenant 5 5-25x56 scope. It's in MOA, but I've been toying with the idea of the Covenant 7 which only come in MIL. That just comes down n the preference, although I believe it has more internal elevation adjustment to it as well.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know that the $500 USD MSRP rule is not that strict. Is this something that is different for various event holders? E.g Club A follows this rule strictly while Club B doesn't.

Sorry if this sounds like a noob question but is the Savage Mk 2 that good to be among the best contenders? Isn't it a lot cheaper than the others like the Tikka T1X and CZ 457 ProVarmint?

Event Holders have no issuing authority over an Organization and its rules. I’ve only ever seen the rules bent once and that was for a physically disabled individual to shoot a CoF which makes a lot of sense and upset nobody. The MRSP cap was probably true at some point in CRPS & ORPS but with our import fees and devalued dollar it most likely got confusing and scrapped. The Production Class list for CRPS/ORPS has been adjusted to better suit the competition itself. How the Lithgow LA101 is on there is beyond me.

PRS is a different monster altogether. Our Club in Ontario is The Northern Rimfire Series directed by Adam Kool.

Clubs/Directors have to follow the rules to the T in order for these series to work or the scores mean nothing outside of that specific club/location. Those of us in the PRS network have the pleasure of seeing where we stack alongside the Americans.

Thank you for the link!
I'm thinking about getting an Athlon Argos BTR Gen2 6-24x50 scope from RedCarpetTelescopes. Would you say it's a solid choice for the Production Division?

If you can save a few more pesos I would go Athlon Helos BTR Gen2 6-24x56 with the APRS6 Mil Reticle.
That’s what I’m running next match. I moved up from a Bushnell Match Pro which had exceptional Glass and Turrets but only 18mil Elevation and Half Mil marks on the Reticle which made it hard to use hold overs at distance. (Ie 150+ meters).

The Athlon Ares ETR 4.5-30x56 is what I have for my Open Class 457 which shares the same reticle.

Both are 34mil Tubes. Helos has 29mils of Internal Elevation Adjustment. 22 Mils is required to reach 400yd Targets. I currently run 50moa Canted Rail on my Open Rig and 65moa (30 moa in rail 35 in Rings) on my ProVarmint. Burris XTR rings will help you achieve the maximum amount of usable Elevation in your scope.

The list I provided has no bearing on the Canadian to US dollar exchange rate, that why it's USD, not Canadian.

As for the scope in question, I have no experience. I am looking at the Cabelas Covenant 7 and the Arken line up, primarily the EP5 if I go that route. However, by the time I'm ready for that, there may be something else out that I may like better.

I am looking at building an open class rifle. I havent decided if I want to build off of my CZ 457 or build another rifle and leave this one for production for my wife, while leaving her current rig for a loaner. It's a Savage MKII FV. It does well, but it's not in the same league as the others you mentioned, even though it is in the same class

Thanks guys for the honest opinions.
Looks like my last added question was overlooked so I’ll post again.

I wouldn’t sink any money into a MarkII if you plan on getting serious about this. Your money will be better spent on a CZ or 700 Micro Action like a Bergara or Ultimatum. A CZ is the Honda Civic of 22LR rifles today with the amount of options available but nothing compares to the 700 footprint options.

I did touch on it a bit, but rubberdonuts got it mostly right.
If you want to stay production, a CZ is your best bet, Tikka would be decent as well. As soon as you go to a 700 footprint rifle like the Ultimatum, Bergara, Vudoo, etc, that would move you in to the open class.

Production division has an approved list. If the rifle is not on that list, then the spending limits apply.

For the rifle what is your budget? If you are able to go the with a variant of the cz 457 and you will be happy. People have already mentioned the different models. The Tikka T1x is also a great choice. The the next best choices would be the ruger precision rimfire and savage line up. Each has some limitations you will eventually run into but they are perfectly fine for getting started. By the time you reach the limits of the rifle you will probably want to upgrade anyhow.

For your scope look for something with 10 mil/revolution and 34 mm tube. The Athlon helos or vortex venom are good choices.

I’m not convinced that buying based on production class is a good idea unless budget is the primary driver of your decision making. Buy a CZ with a match chamber. Then your next purchase, should you go deeper, is better ammunition. People spend thousands on gear and still cheap out on ammo. A match chamber allows that expensive ammo to perform well.

For ORPS, the Savage MkII can work great... once any issues with extraction are dealt with. With the right type of ammo, very accurate. This is a dead end design with limited options for upgrade if you decide to go Open. This was my first rifle and it did well for me.

The CZ457 varmint/match option is the best base to work from.... especially if upgrades are on the future.

T1X can do very well but can have issues with ejector and mags. I think the current NRL champ beat everyone soundly with a T1X in factory form.

If you decide you want to go open, I run a 10/22 with match barrel and other helpful features. Shoots great for me.

My bolt is a Scorpio EM332A... lots to fix but when done, can run really good. This is the DIY of the rifles... and QC will vary.

Very curious about the just announced Springfield Armories 2020 rimfire. If the barrels shoot as we as those reviewed, it checks off alot of boxes I would be interested in.

Thanks guys for the recommendation.
I would love to have a CZ457 but I just bought a new 10/22 a few weeks ago to see if I like the sport. (Ended up loving it!) Is it that much of an upgrade going from a $430 10/22 to a $900 CZ457?
I'm kind of bothered by the idea of selling the gun soon after buying it. And I probably don't need two rimfires.

semi auto has its place for sure, with ammo always being the biggest obstacle to accuracy I would say run it until you prove that the platform is holding you back
