Hey, so I got this 870 wingmaster, it has a V stamp on the receiver so a 2 3/4in standard frame 12ga. The barrel that is on it is a 30in single bead with a weird wavy pattern engraved where a vent rib would normally go. It is stamped FULL on the left side of the chamber and written 12GA for 2 3/4 or shorter shells. There is no recoil pad but a hard butt plate. On the left side of the chamber there is no inspectors mark but 3 letters as opposed to the usual 2, L D U. Based on L being the month is is February but the D would be 1935, 1957 or 1983, I do not suspect 1983. The U would only be 1971 is that there the year code.

It does have the REP Remington stamp on the right side of the barrel.

Thoughts?

Understanding women is easier than dating a Remington.

From an advert currently in the EE right now.(credit Ninjaturkey for the information.)
:Howdy Gunnutz! Got a nice old beauty of a shotgun here for sale. This shotgun is a LE date coded barrel that is original to the gun. The date code on 870's were reused for different years...LE for example years are 2010, 1984, 1958, 1936.( he is referencing Remington 870 Wingmasters)

:The date code on 870's were reused for different years XX for example years are 2030, 2003, 1973, 1929 (again another of his guns with date code information).
Google Remington serial numbers and the information will popup pretty quick.

As for understanding women that can not be found using google.

So they show date codes for pre 870 on that sight, ha ha, so not 1935, must be 1957 as 1983 seems too new and I would think it would have had a vent rib by then.

I can't help you with the markings .... but here is a link to Remington Catalogues spanning over a hundred years. Maybe have a look at catalogues from those dates ..... and that might help you to narrow it down ....

Thanks guys, it has a matted top barrel so looks to be a 1957 De Luxe Wingmaster with a 30in full choke barrel.

It has been well used, maybe I put that limbsaver on it and use it for a slug gun :)

I believe vent ribs were an option right from the get go in 1950. They sold them as plain, matted top surface and vent rib.

I have a matted top surface on a beat up 870 which I believe is from 1952. Pretty sure I also have a vent rib barrel that has the same matted surface on the rib.

Ya, I saw the thing on vent ribs, they became more standard though later on, I had never seen the matted barrel before.
