22 for Deer

If you had done some research, you'd have read that in almost every instance the common reason they were banned is due to their low report for poaching game.

Research?

Good sources?

Where's the use in that when you can just FEEL something is true!

The "no one hears you nightshooting" argument is about the only reason it seems a 22 is better than just about anything else lol.

Far fewer people shot mistaken for game now for sure. Shocking how blaze orange jumps out at dawn or dusk compared to normal clothing. Granted those doing the mistaken shooting were idiots but there are always going to be a few of them in the woods no matter what. I began hunting before the orange rule and have to say I feel a little nervous to be out in the woods cutting wood etc. without orange on now.

I know its off topic but are there any studies to back this argument up? I'm not calling BS on what you're saying. I'd just like to see some paperwork on the before and after, when it comes down to the implementation of these rules. Also, is there a higher percentage of hunting accidents in places like BC that don't have blaze orange rules in place, compared to provonces that do? I've always been curious about this topic.

Me too. It is off topic but anecdotal evidence would indicate it helps reduce mishaps. Especially here in densely forested New Brunswick. Hunting wide open country can't see the benefit and would handicap the hunter when dealing with sharp eyed game like pronghorn.

Would be interesting to see stats for sure.

Don't mind orange, but then again I look both ways before crossing a one-way street...people.

Cartridge effectiveness in shooting shows 9mm is much more deadly than 22. Energy transferred to target is far more valuable than penetration.

On something as thin as a deer, for sure. We ain't talkin cape buff here. They ain't big or toughly made animals at all. Just not seeing how a bigger hole is losing to a smaller hole, tbh.

Less destroyed tissue is more effective? Ohhhkay.

If I were to believe one side of this argument would it not follow that every police force and military in the world would now be dropping the Glocks and Sigs in 9mm and replacing them with 22 semi automatic pistols?
MP 5’s will be dropped in favour of modified 10-22’s.

Think of the savings to be had! Phone Bill Blair so he can start revamping our police and armed forces!

I have hunted blacktails including very small ones with cheapo 223 soft points, buckshot (00) and 243.

I've seen the guy who taught me to hunt (RIP) take blacktails with a pretty wide variety of centrefire 22s including the hornet. Neck and behind the ear shots at extremely close ranges (sub 50)

Having witnessed and partaken in body shots on small deer with 22-250 and 243 they are not even on the same level. If I only ever hunted deer I would probably shoot one them for all my needs. I'd go 243 but I know a few island rednecks who use 22-250. I hunted mulies with one of them in the central Cariboo and never even stopped to ponder if it was enough gun.

Honestly the effect of a full load of 00 buck on a south island blacktail at 20-30 yards from an appropriately choked 12 gauge is something to see. It might be the multiple wounds to the vitals but I never saw one that didn't drop like a sack of potatoes.

Mind you so do HG blacktails when shot with 223 and cheap soft points.

To add fuel to the fire; I would be more than happy to hunt on HG with a 22 mag, limiting shots to ~75 yards.

I've shot coyotes off my deck with 22 lr and fmj 7.62x39 (sue me, it was chasing the dog and it was handy), I know I'd take the latter any day

Just not seeing how a bigger hole is losing to a smaller hole, tbh.

Unless its a 7mm rm instead of a 338 and you're feeling argumentative right?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Alberta had a blaze orange requirement at one time and dropped it, and there was no increase in the number of "accidental" shootings.

Imo, blaze orange is a crutch, a poor substitute for proper safety training. A hunter should always know exactly what he's shooting at... species, ###, even age... and should know what's beyond the target. There's really no excuse.

You are correct, yes.

When I was 10 years old I shot a deer with my Daisy NRA special BB gun. (The scoped one)
Range was about 15 yards and it was shot over bait. (Apple tree in my folks yard)
I drilled it in the hip and it didn’t bother the apple tree again for at least 2 days.
Still have the Daisy. Never recovered the BB.
Wouldn’t hesitate to do it again.

Cool eh, I really like the old Mossbergs too.

Fact remains, the 22 was banned in BC as a Roadblock to those of lower economic status.

How far back are we going here Mig?
Gots some prices here if you’re interested from 1910.
I wasn’t there but my Grandfather was and he left this little catalog to me.
Your favourite 22 LR with hollow points 35 grain bullets sold for 8.00 /thousand.
25 Stevens sold for 14.00 thousand with 65 grain bullets.
32 Long with 90 grain bullets sold at 11.50 thousand.
The 44 “flat” for the Henry and 1866 sold for 24.00 per flat of 1000 rounds.
All rimfire rounds.

25-20’s were 16.00 /1000
30-06 at 55.00 / 1000
Colt 45 22.00/1000
Don’t think you theory’s hold much water if indeed any.

In 1910 a man would work hard all day for a dollar. In WWI a Private got what, $1.25 per day?

In 1990 fresh out of high school i was making $5.25/hr and gas was 39.9c/L. A two bedroom apartment was $375/ month with utilities. Everything is relative. The house and acreage I've been living at for the last 20 years originally cost me less than a new F150 is worth now.

Yes, relative. A 30WCF was ~$20 and a 22 was $3-4.

A "Big Game Rifle" was a month's pay for a lot of people.

You guys have sure have a lot of faith in the Govt's motives.
