A Ukrainian furniture company started making belt boxes for all the various machine guns floating around the country.

That’s because using belt boxes is a Warsaw Pact SOP, western troops are trained to use short belts for the initial burst of fire then feed the gun from either a belt bag or ammo pouch. Different Traing, tactics and techniques

The Brits and a couple of others have, or had, a 50 rd belt box for the MAG 58.
 
Correct, but I’m not sure if it was a case for stopping usage; they found them useless, the CQ didn’t want to issue them because the troops may lose them or the supply system deemed them an expensive/useless item. My monies on the CQ.
 
At the 3:45 minute mark, we get a good look at the back of the gunner and he seems to have a contoured plate that dangles from beneath his carrier (protecting lower spine?). Can anyone tell me whether what he's wearing is a ballistic plate, and if so, is there a matching dangler in front?

There are many local solutions inspired by British Osprey. Osprey was the most popular aftermarket kit one could get in 2014 when war started. Don't even remember how much I paid for mine. All original full set with shoulder covers, side covers, etc. Then donated to the guys who needed it more. Essentially it is called "lower back ballistic protection" and is kevlar only, I.e. Level 3A. You can also get such additions for groins area and your sides and collar too. Collar is savoir when cheap \ stupid ppl use steel plates instead or proper modern technologies.
