One of the dudes I hunt with is a pretty mediocre shot, but he's consistenly mediocre. He doesn't get worse when he's shooting at a nice bull. Turns out their vitals are pretty big. He's otherwise a very good hunter, tracker, woodsman etc.

Have also hunted with guys who shoot wonderfully at the range and then suddenly lack the dexterity to manipulate and load a bolt action rifle when Bullwinkle is in front of them. Its interesting to watch what happens when someone with a severe case of nerves tries to operate a not so smooth and reliable rifle. Rem 710 and 770 I'm lookin at you....but just about anything if they're bad enough.

I'll take the former every time.


Course that guys brother is 150 lbs soaken wet and shoots a 300 Wby better than I can my smaller rifles haha.

I think, if you keep your shots inside 200m a rifle that you can shoot consistently inside of 5” at 100 in any positions will do just fine for most big game animals! If you can’t shoot better than 5” at the bench…. Maybe there is something wrong with you, the rifle, the scope or the ammo!
My friend’s daughter 11 years old shoots her 308 with my reduced load 150gn hot-cor really really well! Sometimes I side 1.5” 3 shot groups! That is pretty good, it is actually better than her dad with his tikka battu in 30-06!!

There's some interesting debate as to why that should be in the same group as the others...as long as the barrels not clean.

That is true for sure.

Group shooting is an interesting way to see what your rifle can do and how close you can count on it being to your point of aim for that first shot, at least. People sure love 3 and over 5, popularity fades real fast lol. But they show the cone that your rifle is going to shoot into, anyway. That first shot is gonna be in there, somewhere.

I know a guy who shot a deer 7 times, including in the nose

Have to wonder how many he missed during that process or why it stuck around but I saw the "after" photos he was happily sharing

Maybe this is why so many guys on here carry enough ammo for a firefight on them according to the threads in the hunting forum...
 
Was watching Hornady spouting off how accurate their match ammo is, didn't have any luck with it, out of the same boxes, two bullet weights, two different guns, Herters shot better in both. And yet there are people out there that swear by the Hornady match, even shoot comps with it. This kid won't be.
I'm reasonably happy with a factory huntng gun starting out, that shoots around the moa mark, few grps under, some maybe just over. Means I can usually inprove on that quite a bit. Think Rem was the one who started the MOA "guarantee", they were better than many others at that time, can't remember just when, maybe late 80's ?

Probably makes quite some difference depending on what rifle one is shooting it from.

Great news everyone.

Killzone on a deer and moose are larger than 1moa. Just aim on center and control your adrenaline and you'll have hit your mark.

cant explain about the moa ...im coming from country where we used metrics lol ...

the most tragic i will say is that within 3 seasons half of the hunters had rifle not sighted or even worse on those half another half had the scope not mounted ... so 25% of hunters showing off for a paid hunt with not optic installed and another 25% not being ready sighted ... and those hunts were not cheap in the day ...
 
well the firing range was busy when we had finish to mount the scopes lol ... i discovered that for 2 reasons how the hunter is ok with his /her rifle and how it is sighted ...
 
I sort of skipped through the video and couldn't find much fault with the message. Generally speaking, I don't think it matters too much. I have, and have had, many rifles which would shoot MOA; consistently enough that I was pretty confident of being able to produce a sub -moa group on demand. I have even more which will shoot sub-moa on occasion. The truth is, I seldom shoot from a rest anymore, unless I am shooting a BR rifle or "F" class gun. For most of my hunting rifles, once they are proven and sighted in, I shoot from field positions. I don't own any factory rifles (being saddled with a bunch of home-made junk), but I've shot a few. Some have been amazingly accurate.
 
2 years ago we did a days shooting at the range with two Tikka T3 rifles. One was my 20" stainless 308 CTR in a tactical carbon fibre stock, the other a brand new factory T3 Lite blued. The only thing we did to that was to remove the pressure bedding notch in the barrel channel to have her free floating. Ammo selection is not great where we live but I managed to get a few boxes of 168gr Sako Match. I like ammo with a year stamp in the case head. Groups were shot off the bench, sandbag in the front and rear. Quite light rifle hold. Range 200yds. At the end of the day with all results added we were well under 1MOA. Closer to 1/2MOA.
