So about 7 months ago, I purchased an M1 garand from TNA. I purchased it over layaway as I was in my off-season at work, and happily got it. Well, then my contract started, so I checked fitment, everything looked good, and I saw that they had fired two rounds of barnaul through it no problem, so I essentially put it in mu climate controlled safe and went home. I just finished up work for a few weeks, saw a thread on the TNA Garands, and decided to check mine. I checked every part with a caliper, found them all to be in spec, and even waited patiently for Garand Grease in exact spec to arrive. I went to the range tonight, loaded 8 rounds of M2 ball, 150 grain, Garand specific ammo.

On my 9th round, the OP rod exploded.

Included in a link to catbox, an image sharing sight, it is a picture of the Garand, with exploded OP rod.
The part I am holding is the end of the oprod. I made sure to do everything exactly right. I’ll be reaching out to TNA in the AM to see what they can do. Hopefully they’ll be able to fix this.
This rifle was advertised as Field Grade - tired wood but perfectly working internals.

If a gun can’t get through a total of 11 rounds since being purchased, it’s not exactly “perfectly working” is it?

Very sad day.

UPDATE:

TNA HAS FIXED MY PROBLEM. THEY ROCK! Collin in particular is a SUPERSTAR. They didn't have to fix this at all, but they are taking care of it.

I'll keep this thread up so that people know how awesome TNA are, how even with a customer who bought their gun several months ago, they still agreed to fix it, and that they are 100% a class act!

Thanks everyone who replied, good and bad! I appreciate all the input and messages of support.
GO TNA!!!

UPDATE: I emailed TNA last night and will wait for an update from them.
I would just be happy if they sent me a new operating rod. As I said, the gun worked fine otherwise, and was actually quite accurate (I am not the best shooter and I've got poor eyesight, but I was hitting a paper plate every time at 100 yards)

Not that i'm defending TNA, but "exploded" is serious melodramatic for the end of the oprod breaking off.
I'm more interested in where they sourced the oprods for their builds, so I can look out of that in the future. Only real way to prevent this would be to magnaflux each and every part of a rifle before building it, which would cost more than the parts do.

So it was all in spec, satisfactory condition, no issues, test fired ok.

And then a multiple decades old part failed while you were shooting it. What would you have expected them to do about that ahead of time...? Do you think they knew the part was going to fail but sent it to you anyways?

"Horror story" is being a bit dramatic, don't you think?

No, I don’t think it’s dramatic. I think that by definition if a firearm can’t get through more than one enbloc lf ammunition made specifically for it, that that’s a horror story.
Nobody pays 2300$ for a firearm and is happy if it shoots 9 shots, less the two steel cased shots they shot (which split the cases).

No problem, I understand. I say “exploded” due to what actually happened when the rifle shot. Bang, and then the parts flew apart lol.
I understand that it wasn’t “blown out” like it coulda been

You had the gun 7 months. TNA have no proof how many rounds you fired since you got it. But it does not matter. It’s a 80 years old gun after all. You are buying milsurp at discounted price because of condition. It is what it is when you buy it.

In my book you are on your own on this one….

Well of course you wouldn't think so, you posted it. But it absolutely is.

Guy, it's an 80 year old milsurp rifle; an easily replaced part failing is NOT a horror show. Buy a brand new gun with a warranty next time.

Really!!!! You buy a surplus gun and expect an 80 year old gun to shoot as good as a new rifle what are you thinking??? Like I said something like this screams potential repair!!! These rifles were abused at every level and subjected to very harsh conditions I would expect something would go sideways some day. True TNA haven't done there homework and didn't do proper rifle servicing, glancing a rifle doesn't count as servicing, firing the rifle doesn't count either. I think TNA dropped the ball on all of these M1 Garands they brought in and OVERCHARGING the consumers for these improperly serviced rifles. From my understanding another customer recently also had issues with bore and cartridge ejection issues as well as sub par target issues on this deal. This customer was also asking TNA to resolve the issue and then TNA posted this recently asking CGN members for there input on the matter of store policy and refund. CGN members still haven't seen or heard from any members of TNA on the last issue and has locked down the thread. Good luck on your case with TNA maybe they will assist you to a safe resolve on this matter for you as I believe they were candid when they inspected these firearms if they did anything before putting a for sale sign on these guns.

I didn't expect it to shoot as good as a new rifle, I just expected it to shoot at all! LOL! Anyways you make a great point that it definitely seems like the rifles weren't serviced by TNA at all, even though they were advertised as such. I hope TNA resolves this. I have faith in them as they've been AWESOME to deal with in the past. Even in the title of my thread I say that they're great! I really like TNA and have given them thousands of dollars in business over the last decade or so, so I'm not too worried. I know they'll come through. Just a new Op Rod, or even repairing/rewelding this one would do. Seems like a cheap and easy fix from them. I don't even want my money back, just a working rifle.

Holy smokes, the boomers here are insufferable sometimes. Making a little note not to buy from the clowns who would happily sell you a over 2000$ garand that breaks after one clip.

OP, that sucks. I hope they do you right.

Lasted longer than my brand new NEA AR-15 that exploded in my face. I wouldn't even consider that a horror story.

There is only so much control retailers have in their wares, perhaps reserve judgement until a resolution is made or not made before jumping on the "TNA is terrible" band wagon as of late.

I agree! I've defended TNA in this thread, even. I hope they fix things; I'm sure they will since they've been great to me in the past. Also, I think it's a worthwhile warning to people that TNAs Garands of late are worth avoiding! is it really a bandwagon if a significant number of them are failing spectacularly?

Thanks man, I hope so too! I really just want to warn other CGNers about it - if they don't fix it, that's their decision, but my warning is still valid. Why people would complain about being given a FREE "heads up" is beyond me lmfao

"Hey, watch out! Icy roads ahead!"
"REALLY YOU DRIVE ON ICE AND EXPECT IT NOT TO BE SLIPPERY? RABBLE RABBLE!"
Ah well, all you can do is warn people I guess.

Significant number? Like 2, for completely different reasons? You and the other guy?

A part broke on a milsurp gun, that test fired fine when it left their shop, and then you post a big "DO NOT BUY" thread before you even give them a chance to make it right.

Well, that's one way to do this lol. Welcome to Mil Surp guns. Enjoy your stay. Try a $3000 plus one next time lol.
