Technique is required where strength is lacking, working smarter and not harder is not the worst lesson to learn young.
I'd lean towards a break barrel and figure out a technique that works for him.
That’s what I was kinda thinking, as I’ve seen some that have a large muzzle end that suppose to make it easier to break it
But then again with a multi pump he can pump as many times as his arms can do, 4-5x likely and as he gets use to it and a bit stronger then he’ll be able to pump it more as well up to 10x
Having to pump multiple times for each shot is likely going to get old fast and I doubt will be a lot easier as most pump handles are quite short so you loose the leverage advantage that a break barrel has and poi varies depending on the amount of times pumped so that adds another level of possible inaccuracy.
IMO just find a small sized youth pellet gun. My daughter was shooting a break barrel gun way before she was ten years old so your 12yo son should be fine with something that is sized right.
Consider perhaps small sized vintage pellet guns, I have two Diana model 23 guns and a Slavia 618 and donated another Slavia 618 to the gunclub. This one gets used a lot by very small kids there.
These guns are very well made and quite accurate, not a Red Rider spray/shoot and pray type of gun![]()
Ya I haven’t seen many youths pellets guns besides the red Ryder one in my area at local stores

This does not look too bad if you don't mind a polymer stock.
Sort of the little brother of the air hawk (post #20). I would not advise the air hawk as it is likely pretty big and heavy for your son.
Well I know my son wouldn’t care for the looks of that rifle he would prefer either wooden or a full solid poly stock he isn’t a fan of the frame style stocks
Get a Diana RWS 240 Classic .177 495FPS (DIA-AR-037). Diana has been around for 133 years. That is what I got my son and still have it.
Great advice, I second this.
Will be a bit over your budget but you won’t regret it. It will keep its value really well.
Regarding the beeman 22 you mentioned in post 27; I would not think that is a good idea.
22 pellets in lower power air guns have not so great trajectory and pellets are twice as expensive as .177
I might have a line on a break barrel and target system in 22 cal for 3 boxes of 30-30 ammo. Have to see once my order arrives if he’ll trade![]()
Make sure it is even worth the trade. What is he offering?
Because I wouldn't trade 3 boxes of ammo for say a Crosman or Benjamin, Nor a Beeman or any other of the entry level break barrels. Target system, could be usless. If it is a PAL rated 22, alot of them are not rated for 22 and you destroy them.
Ya it’s a beeman 22, self reset targets made of steel
