.32 Winchester Special

I'm not fond of Winchester's top eject sending the brass flying up in front of my face.

I'm more of a Marlin guy,
1960-61, Marlin 336RC 32Spl

IMO, not a whole lot separates the 30-30 and 32Spl, it's a 6 of one, 1/2 doz of another kinda thing.
To remove all doubt the best thing to do is get one of each, I did.

Nice.

The 32 is more powerful than the 30 for a variety of reasons; larger bore, more powder capacity due to shorter bullets, and slower twist. All of which add up to ~100fps.

100fps is plenty to argue over.

I hunted with a nice 1957 94 carbine in 32 Special, and also own a 1918 32 rifle with a peep. I really don’t worry about any differences or similarities between 32WS and 30-30. I think nostalgia is what led me to a 32WS. I do have a Canadian centennial carbine and a nice Savage 99 takedown carbine, both in 30-30. I wouldn’t argue with anybody over any cartridge.

The 32 special has a slower rifling twist than the 30-30. It is supposedly so black powder loads result in better accuracy than the 30-30 could deliver. There was a time when smokeless powder was not very available, but every hardware store had black powder, and would sell you any amount and dispense it in a paper bag.

What was the original question again? Oh yea....... which is better the 30-30 or .32 WS? Geesh!

Lol. The 30-30 is better in every way. The 32spl is more interesting and the rifle will re-sell for more money.

The deer won’t be any more dead because the bullet was 2/100ths of an inch wider. That’s the thickness of a fingernail.

Case is same for 32ws and 30-30. Not that I like the wrong caliber head stamp. Between any of the three most common medium lever gun calibers; 30-30, 32, 35 rem, very little difference. Deer wouldn't notice, you will sourcing ammo or components.

Not much to chose between 30/30 and 32 special. However the 35 remington is head and shoulders above the Winchester rounds. I've shot a few with the 35 and my dad killed several dozen with the 35. Far more knockdown power, better penetration . As far as a woods rifle goes the 35 Remington is hard to beat.

I have several .32 Specials and no longer own a .30-30. I have lots of Winchester Silvertip loads and the .32 is one of the best small bore, cast bullet cartridges due to its twist rate. While mostly a Winchester guy, my Marlin 336A from the 50’s is a favourite. In retrospect, I would prefer that my ‘94 carbine was a .38-55 as its larger bore would be even better for cast at iron sight ranges.

If being able to pick up factory shells pretty much everywhere or if cast bullets are not really for you, then I’d say get the .30-30. No moose, deer, black bear, etc will know the difference.

Thanks a lot guys....
I've been casually looking for the "right" 30-30 in a pre-64 '94, and now I have to buy 2 rifles. lol

I've sold all my 32 specials, 32-40s, 32-20s, 25-20s a few years ago in covid bubble craze.
In 5 years if one doesn't reload you are pretty much pooched for ammo in my opinion.
I've updated to easy to find cartridges 243, 350 Legend, 30-30 (never part with those), 6.5 Creed, etc.
I'll add a 300 blackout bolt action sometime.
The modern cartridges (not 243 duh), are plentiful and that 350 Legend is an absolute gem of a round for bear and whitetails.
Black Bear is the biggest I need rifles for.

Why use a paper weight?
There i sno factory ammo anywhere.
Just use 30-30 - its everywhere.
####### sellers are smoking drugs. $1000+? please
I wouldn't give them 50 bucks for one.
32 Special is a wonderful round but useless is no ammo is available.

You may not be quite correct - I just did a quick google search and this popped up as the first hit:

Ammunition Reloading Shop Canada - https://ammoreloadingshop.ca Who'd have thought that a reloading shop would sell factory ammo? Go figure....

Another Google hit: Ammo Depot Canada - https://ammodepotcanada.com/product/32-special-ammo-canada/

Most places are admittedly out of stock, but those two show stock on hand. That said, they may both be scam sites - I don't know as I don't currently reload and typically buy from the well-known vendors. The desire for payment via EMT is kind of sketchy IMHO. Forewarned is fore-armed....

The .32Spcl has been obsolete for oh about 100 years, but as a close-range in the timber rifle they are still effective as hell.

My grandpa bought a great old Saddle Ring carbine, way back like 1925(?), which has been handed down 2x's now and is still in the family.
As much as I disdain the cartridge I would love to own that particular rifle!

Too bad dem 94 32ws dint come in ahhh pump.
See tru rings and shazaaam, dem nor-east'iner's bee awl over it.

I'm thinking you're a closet pump gunner at heart. You just mock us right coasters to hide that fact.

Time to come out and express your true self to the world.

Hopefully they're not scam sites, 'cause they got loads of primers for sale.
