Change bolt head on Rem 783

What's involved in changing the bolt head on a Remington 783? Is it simply a swap or is there machining/fitting involved?

Anyone knows id the bolt head swap would/could impact reliability?

Reliability for Rem 783 - I never tried to swap bolt head - would be my wild guess that headspace and "squareness" with the lugs bearing would be important to verify? But I did swap out a firing pin spring - I had got a 243 Win Rem 783 for Grandson - after perhaps 100 rounds of my hand loads, he got two misfires - multiple re-cocks to try to make them fire in his rifle - Fed 210 primers - but both rounds fired right away in my Ruger 77 - so I "assumed" that was due to weaker than needed firing pin strike - on whatever basis, I satisfied myself that the firing pin protrusion on that Rem 783 was appropriate. Jerry Tao (Mystic Precision) on CGN says he changes out those springs on his Rem 783 every season. I could not find actual Rem 783 springs, so, made some by slightly shortening Rem 700 Short Action springs. Pretty sure that I made up three - have not heard of any more mis-fires from Grandson. One spring went winging off into junk pile corner upon red-neck re-assembly attempt, the second got installed and I left the third with him as a spare.

Depends on what caliber/ bolt diameter.

If your swapping say a .308 to a 6.5 CM then all you need is appropriate barrel and set of go nogo gauges.

So if you look at a boltface diameter chart, you should be good to go with anything that matches your current bolt.

The boltheads are secured by a dowel crosspin. Can't see why they couldn't be swapped. Three sizes - 223, .308, belted magnum. You would need to confirm that the firing pin fit and protrusion were correct.
Headspace would have to be checked, but if you are changing bolt heads, presumably you are changing barrels as well.
I suspect that receivers are short or long, and feed is controlled by the detachable magazines.

In the case I am considering, I would be going from a 6.5 creed to a 6mm ARC. I think I found the appropriate bolt head (link below), of course the barrel would be replaced (seems to be an endless list of options for these), and magazine would be taken care of by the move to a chassis (likely MDT).

I am wondering if the reliability would be impacted as the end use would likely be some light PRS and general duty use. Searches seems to be somewhat split on that topic, as it would seem some rifle models can't be modified, and some although compatible become jam-o-matics.

OK, the ARC has a smaller head diameter, so a new bolt head would be needed. Is there a magazine that will fit the AICS well in the MDT chassis that works with the ARC?
Assuming there is a magazine that will feed properly, I can't see why reliability would be compromised.

As far as the magazine goes, it looks like MDT has three options https://mdttac.ca/6mm-arc/, I'd assume they work decently in https://mdttac.ca/xrs-chassis-system/ seeing as they come from the same place.

Isn't the bolt head the critical part to the feeding of the round? (I am genuinely asking, my experience in this field is slim to none.) If an issue is to appear, can it be customized/fitted/worked on, or is it a "this is what you get" kind of thing?

The bolt heads are going to be externally identical. Feed should not be affected by the bolt head. Magazines and specific cartridges are another matter. Sometimes feed lips of steel magazines can be adjusted if necessary; plastic ones, not so much.

Things don't always go as planned. Ideally, once assembled, leave it alone unless something breaks or wears out.

There are at least 2 different extractor styles.. there might be a third???? There is nothing specific to the SPC case head

YMMV

Jerry, what is the BEST fix for light firing pin strikes in the 783?

With apologies for the derailing to the op,
Ted

WOLFF Rem 700 SA 24lbs firing pin spring. Chop 1/2 to 3/4" shorter... life becomes very good again. Same spring used in the LAs which is a smart adaptation to parts supply.

I have tried the 28lbs and didn't like it.

Yep, exactly what I used and did - seems to be working fine. At the time, the only Canadian source that I could come up with, was at Corlane's in Dawson Creek, B.C. - apparently what they use as well, in their shop. They might be available at other places, now-a-days.
