6.8 Western, is it going to last?

I haven’t encountered or heard of one other than RSA that’s flexible on that, and RSA isn’t really darkest Africa or where the adventure’s at these days. Even RSA checks, the thoroughness of it is up for debate however. It’s why I had a headstamp bunter made for my .375 Kemano wildcat.

Interesting cartridge. Haven't heard of it before. This is a known wildcat or a one off you designed?

The PRC family is really taking off and may just bury the Western. Anyone including current owners have some thoughts or input?

Cheers,
Shaun

That's how I feel about it with regards to longevity. With 6.5prc and 7prc I just can't see much room for it long term.

That said, if you can just find some brass who cares how long it lasts on the market! If you want one buy it. You only live once and you can't take your money with you when you go.

Only Browning/Winchester make ammo or brass. They aren't marketing it well, without the marketing the number of rifles sold is small and other manufacturers don't chamber or load 6.8.

In the last 20+ years there's been a lot of calibers that have failed. Of the Wsm and rum families, only the 300's are popular. Rugers compact magnums died, and the 375 ruger is popular only as a 375, which is to say not at all. Remingtons rsaum died at birth, much like the wssm family.

Over the years, lots of calibers "replaced" or were compared to the 270win. Yet they are fringe calibers, the 270win remains. Other than the 6.5 Creedmoor when did a new caliber become wildly successful? Would that be the 7 rem mag?

Nowarningshot, that's a good assessment. This is just one more cartridge in a huge field. The marketing and manufacturing support is not there. While I think it's a good cartridge at the end of the day it doesn't really do anything that many others already do. That being said I did buy one, 5 boxes of ammo, a set of dies and some bullets, but I'm not getting rid of my 270 win.

I'll have to find some of those 155's to try in my 270 Wby. - dan

Factory barrel twist ? GOOD Luck in those flying straight ! Guarantee they will tumble ! That bullet is 1.555 inches long . You need at least a 8 twist fir that barrel and with that a 7-7.5 twist would be better . I tried some 95 LRX ers in my 240 WBee 10 twist and they tumbled . Nosler 95 gr BTips fly GREAT at 3600 fps with lots of RL26 thou . RJ

YouTube guys....Reloading Weatherby and iirc either Ron Spoomer or Ultimate Reloader did tests with larger than 150gr .277/6.8 in standard twist rifles. Think it was 165gr, so while there are now 175gr .277, one would think a 165gr .277 would have a very good bc. Not sure if the 175gr bullets available are target or hunting bullets. Previously about the only bullets larger than 150gr were the semi round nose 160 nosler partition and some old norma full round nose.

Pretty sure, heavy all copper or gilding metal bullets that are super long would not stabilize or have to be seated deep in the case. Seating deep in the case, robs powder space so you have a .277 bullet at 308 win/303 velocity.

I was thinking thats why they only have load data for 6.8 Western with 1:8 and not the other catridges from 1:10 barrels on the Barnes website. Hadn't heard of that bullet before. Googling it, that is inndeed what they say. 8 twist or faster.

Sometimes I'm surprised. Stabilizes 160's just fine, though they are shorter. Worth a try though. - dan
