Same, would love to hear about people's experiences with different calibers/distances/game types.
6mm ARC was developed by Hornady for the US military, specifically to pierce body armor at long range - 900-1000m. With the right expansion this much energy should be adequate for medium game at that distance (ethics of long shots aside).
That would be cool. Good point about the 7.62x39 bolt face complicating things.
My brother in Alberta bought one of those cheap Savage Axis 2 6mmARC's that were floating around last year. He thought it was a POS when it arrived. He adjusted the trigger down 2.8lbs and took to the range and stacked 5 rounds on top of each other.
What he likes is there is no recoil to speak of.
We have a large family farm back there and he was sitting in a tree stand off one of our fields. Well a 10pt mulie popped out in the other field 500yds away. We hunted there for 50 years so we know our ranges very well. He was zeroed for 200yds and said what the hell. He dropped it 487yds (lasered from the buck back to the stand). Held 3 inches high off the front elbow and he hit it dead on..
He had full passthrough at 500yds. Jesus. It was just boxed Hornady Hunter ammo.
I hope this helps. It doesn't help me because he brags about it every damn time we talk. 345lb Mulie... Real beautiful buck.
I asked what his rig was so I could post for you guys
Savage Pos Axis 2 - That stock is crap he says. Paid $600 bucks for it.
Vortex 4-16x44 (I think 44)
Hornady Hunter
Shoots .5MOA or better 50 rounds through + 1 round hunting.
Seems pretty damn good to me.
It does. Same if you rebarrel a 700 to 6 PPC. It's close, but not quite there. PTG sells a 700 bolt with the correct face. Delivery is slow however. Some 308 bolt faces will extract the ppc cases, if the extractor is slightly oversized. - dan
