Ontario Controlled Deer Hunt - Sadness for my Group

Well, the Ontario controlled deer hunt results are out. Based on previous year's numbers we decided to apply in two groups of 3. First choice historically had a ~60% chance of tags, while our second choice (about a 10 min drive from deer camp) had a 98% -100% chance of tags.

Both groups were UNSUCCESSFUL for both Choice 1 and Choice 2. Definitely surprised - first year in like 10 years we didn't get one or the other (SSW Ontario).

Current plans are to archery hunt the week before the controlled hunt. Still liking our chances, but prefer the ~100 yard range of my rifled 12g shotgun with sabots vs my ~30 yard range of my crossbow. I guess the good news is I save $$ not shooting $6/round sabots!

I should probably research if deer hunter numbers are up or if tags are down (or a combo). In either case, had to change my vacation from the first full week of November to the last days of Oct / first days of Nov.

Hope others had a successful draw!

well for the most part in Alberta there is little need to rely on the draw for a deer tag there are plenty of zones with open seasons.

bit of a bummer that 6 guys couldn't get one tag

In my area you have 100% chance and available second tag. They are as abundant as hooved rats. My place is in the edge of town and I have 8-10 walk through my yard every day

Sorry to hear that you got snookered. My buddy and I applied for antlerless tags in our WMU (56) hoping to duplicate last year where we were both successful. This year we're 1 and 1 (doe and buck).

The group that hunts my property got their tags for controlled hunt for the Decembers hunt.

As a land owner/farmer, I need to apply separately and in person with proof of ownership. (local property tax papers will do)
Got antlered and antlerless tag for 76A

My dad owns land so I can go on his landowners application but my wife had to apply, she got hers applying as an individual in 86A.

I cannot image not getting the validation for the controlled hunt.

^^^ You forgot to add that the biologists are complete morons and haven't clue what they're doing from their privileged office jobs and soft chairs.

Although there are fewer hunters overall compared to previous decades, the controlled hunt is about management of the herd. There is no entitlement to always get a tag simply because you've always been pulled.

That's brutal, Are they cutting tags in your area? You think more people are applying in controlled hunt as they want to bow hunt that week?

Not sure what the cause but it won’t be bow hunting. The archery season closes the week of the controlled hunt. Sounds like we may have been lucky our entire group got tags

In 93A they now allow bow hunters during the controlled hunt. I believe this is contributing to the lower success rate. I know of at least 2 bow hunters who applied last year (and I assume they both applied this year also).

New rules since last year in southern Ontario.
