Anyone in Canada reprofile barrels?

I often read about shops in the states that’ll reprofile AR barrels. Does anyone in Canada do this?

I have two MRA SPR profile barrels, one fluted and one not, that I’d like to get reprofiled into a sorta hybrid of the Faxon Gunner and Ballistic Advantage Hanson.

Is this service even cost effective in Canada? With 18.6” barrels being rare these days I wonder if selling them and getting barrels made to my specs is the better way to go.

Thanks all.

Recontouring an AR barrel is less bother than reprofiling a conventional tapered rifle barrel. Essentially two halves divided by the gas block mounting area. Any gunsmith should be able to handle the job. Assuming the barrels are not nitrided.

Thanks, they are nitrided. Guessing that makes it far more difficult or not doable. Hadn’t considered that.

Any idiot with a lathe could reprofile an AR barrel

Nitride is not very thick. It just takes carbide tooling to get through that outer layer. I've modified nitrided stainless parts in the past. I don't remember it being overly difficult. A HSS drill bit won't like it but there are solutions for every problem.

I was thinking that turning a nitrided fluted barrel could be interesting, with the interrupted cut. Don't know if the tool would appreciate that.

It should be really easy for any machinist to turn down a barrel. Like others have said, a straight walled AR barrel is much easier to hold onto then a tapered one. Someone with a CNC lathe could do any profile you could possibly imagine with very little trouble.

You hammer it into the muzzle as far as possible and light off a round.
Will "reprofile" the barrel...

LOL, actually it wouldn't. I have tried something similar and the bullet simply cleaves off the end of the barrel where it meets the obstruction. Its quite impressive yet also underwhelming to witness.

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

If your intention was a fluted barrel then it's not a problem.

We regularly machine a 58HRC hard welded die trim edge with carbide end mills, not carbide inserted mills.

Well, considering the thread title involves reprofiling, I'm not sure how fluting fits into that question? Not to mention the OP specifically mentions the barrel is already fluted and thus wonders what the interrupted cut would do to a turning tool. Fluting a barrel with a carbide end mill doesn't really seem to address the issue under discussion.

Reading and comprehension are an actual thing ... even today.

I bought a new barrel second hand for an ACR that was originally a DMR heavy profile that ATRS re contoured to be a pencil profile. I don't know what they charged to do it but the work is fantastic.
