some people give bad advice to first time hunters here.

Bad advice

For a new hunter's first rifle something in the 270/06 class should be perfect. In my opinion the 243 is too small and requires perfect placement. Don't want to argue, I know tons of guys kill deer every year with the 243. The 270/06 has plenty of killing power with moderate recoil the a newby can master with a little practice. Just to keep all you non magnum feaks going, I hunted deer this year with my Rigby.:p

Lazy Ike's advice to all newbs. Please sticky.

Purchase a quality firearm: This is your first rifle. If it is maintained and built right, they can pry it out of your cold dead hands or your kids can have it.

Purchase a quality optic: You don't wear a clown hat with a tux!

I always recomend a 416 Rigby as a good place to start: Low recoil, readily avaiable cheap and premium ammo and nobody has anything bad to say about a Swede.

Practice alot: A man who is not proficient with the tools he owns, is an embarassment to the gender.

Read alot: You will NEVER know everthing but you better know something.

Why is everyone assuming this guy is a new shooter, when he says he is a first time hunter. How many guys on this site busted sporting clays, or shot IPSC before ever deciding to pick up a "hunting rifle" The only point i really tried to make the first time around is that if he can use gunnutz, he can order ammo for the rarer rounds out there. I highly doubt that coming to gunnutz and asking us what he should get will be his first and last stop before laying down the cash for a new setup. That would be dumb. If he didn't research it a bit further at least, he deserves what ever he ends up with.

Good point I had better edit my previous post.

I had no idea the Rigby was Swedish. See! I learnded sumpin' new today....:D

What I am trying to say is that the 20 gauge is not always the best choice over the 28 gauge. If the shooter is young or light the 20 gauge can push then around quite badly. The lighter recoil of the 28 gauge over the 20 gauge can allow them be shoot better, no flinch. With no flinching they can shoot the 28 gauge better and hit more game than they can from a 20 gauge shotgun that is causing them to flinch.

As for waterfowl hunting with a 28 gauge I have killed a fair number of ducks with mine.

For us there is no trouble shooting even the big bore shotguns. With younger or lighter shooters this is not always the case.

cripes my bro and myself had my son at the age of fourteen getting into reloading his own shells.with our supervision of course.just because the person just got their PAL does not mean they don't know anything

+2, I was reloading for my .303 within a month of getting my PAL. And within a few months I had dies, and guns for 6.5x55, 30-30, 7.62x39. And I didn't have anyone but myself, and a couple of good reloading books to go by. :)

If I had to give advice to a new hunter I'd send someone off to the gun store for a sportered .303 to start with, or simply let them borrow or even buy the one I have, and meet them at the range for a few days per week, a couple of months before the hunt.

X2, I'll say it again. If he doesn't want to use the search tool, then he can weed through the jokes and bad advise. Or he can PM The_big_Mike, cause he knows everything.;) I'll refer all newbies to you from here on out, to save everyone else the time of answering the same old questions.

If he is basing his purchase on what he reads on the intraweb and doesn't want to go to any shops, well good luck.

Yes and without mentioning any names I've seen people push the 28 gauge when the poster specifically mentioned waterfowling.

The poster had asked for opinions for a, "pitite wife."I have already given my reasons why I advised a 28 gauge so I will not repeat them here.:)

Problem is blargon, CGN is a resource, likely much better than any gun shop out there. I do agree with Mike, BUT there is nothing wrong with tossing in a 416 suggestion...though it should be followed up with a J/K or something to indicate that the suggestion is only a joke. I like to think that we have many experienced gun/hunting vets on here, and I would hope that most new comers to the sport see this as well. I have come across many a thread that were of little value to a serious question that could easily be misinterpreted. And I'd hate for a newb to have a first experience of purchasing a rigby, shoooting it, recovering from 2 weeks in ICU, only to return to the board to sell his new once fired, slightly cracked stock from dropping it, at a nominal loss. Improbable, but not impossible.

petite wife or not, the 28ga is a joke.

20ga actually has ammo available in stores with a much bigger selection, and a gas-op'd action and quality recoil pad tames recoil down to a level tolerable by anyone - even a handicapped gnome. if not there are managed recoil loads for pumps.

Well, tht was the reason for my tort reply.

He really did not give us any information other than; first rifle, 300WM, 7mm Mag.

I dont know of anyone on here that is qualified to give advice with such limited info, unless some of you are claravoient(sp???)

I should start a thread;

WHY DO PEOPLE ASK US TO MAKE A DECISION FOR THEM WITHOUT GIVING US ALL THE INFO NEEDED TO MAKE AN EDUCATED DECISON

people ask questions because they are looking for answers not abuse. i guess it has been along time since any of you needed any help. no one wants you to make a decision for them they would however like to benefit from your experience. this forum is about a lot of things and one of them is comraderie. perhaps that needs to be taken into consideration. the topic may have been gone over again and again but the volume of posts and threads and info is staggering to saty the least. so some of you may be asked to repeat yourselves. that i would think would be flattering. it isnt easy to break into this fraternity so alittle more patience for those of us who are young and new on this journey we need you old hands to help us sift throught the volumes of info that is available. i wish to say thank you to all those who have helped me with advice and helped me to learn how to do research on my own. i believe that it has helped me a great deal.

Well if you like to give vague jokes when a first time hunter is learning to hunt/shoot, go ahead. Won't get any praise from me.

.

I am sure that prior to replying to a thread, many members of CGN think "Is this post going to earn the praise of the_big_ mike?"

I just dont' happen to be one of them.;)

You really have to reach for things, don't you?

You have contributed nothing of value to this thread, except make lame sarcastic remarks.
